Drinking Water Standing and Drinking it in One Breath

1601. hadíth Majlisī: حسن كالصحيح

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِذْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ الْقُمِّيُّ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ أَ فَأَشْرَبُ بِنَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ حَتَّى أَرْوَى قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ قَالَ فَأَسْجُدُ وَ يَدِي فِي ثَوْبِي قَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنِّي وَ اللَّهِ مَا مِنْ هَذَا وَ شِبْهِهِ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ .

4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father and Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), when ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qummiy came and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, can I drink water standing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ He then asked, ‘Can I drink in one breath until I am satisfied?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If you like you can do so.’ He then asked, ‘Can I perform Sajdah (prostration) with my hand in my pocket?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You can do so if you like.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), then said, ‘I, by Allah, am not afraid for you of this and similar things (as long as your belief is proper).”’

1602. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي الْمِقْدَامِ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَا وَ أَبِي فَأُتِيَ بِقَدَحٍ مِنْ خَزَفٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ فَشَرِبَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَهُ أَبِي فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ نَاوَلَنِيهِ فَشَرِبْتُ مِنْهُ وَ أَنَا قَائِمٌ .

5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from his grandfather from ‘Abd Allah ibn al- Mughirah from ‘Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam who has said the following: “Once my father and I were with abu Ja’far (a.s.), when a bowl made of pottery with water was brought. He (the Imam) drank standing. He then gave it to my father who also drank standing and gave it to me and I also drank standing.’”

1603. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ ابْنِ الْعَرْزَمِيِّ عَنْ حَاتِمِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمَدِينِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ يَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ وَ هُوَ قَائِمٌ ثُمَّ يَشْرَبُ مِنْ فَضْلِ وَضُوئِهِ قَائِماً ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَى الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ جَدَّكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) صَنَعَ هَكَذَا .

6. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ibn al-‘Arzamiy from Hatim ibn ’Isma‘il al-Madiniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin once drank water standing. He then drank the water left from his wudu standing; then he turned to Al-Husayn (a.s.), and said, ‘Son, I saw your grandfather, the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, doing as I just did.’”

1604. hadíth Majlisī: حسن

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ ثَلَاثَةُ أَنْفَاسٍ فِي الشُّرْبِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ نَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ .

7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Drinking water in three breaths is better than in one breath.’”

1605. hadíth Majlisī: مختلف فيه

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُعَلًّى أَبِي عُثْمَانَ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ خُنَيْسٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ ثَلَاثَةُ أَنْفَاسٍ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ نَفَسٍ وَاحِدٍ .

8. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from Mu‘alfa’ ibn ‘Uthman from Mu’alla’ ibn Khunayth who has said the folio wing: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Drinking water in three breaths is better than in one breath/”

1606. hadíth Majlisī: مرسل

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ فَلَا يَقْطَعُ نَفَسَهُ حَتَّى يَرْوَى قَالَ فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) وَ هَلِ اللَّذَّةُ إِلَّا ذَاكَ قُلْتُ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ شُرْبُ الْهِيمِ قَالَ فَقَالَ كَذَبُوا إِنَّمَا شُرْبُ الْهِيمِ مَا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَيْهِ .

9. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of his people from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from an old man from the people of al- Madinah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who drinks water in one breath until he is satisfied. He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) said, ‘Is the pleasure of taste anything but that?’ I then said, ‘People say that it is the thirsty camel’s way of drinking.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘They have spoken a lie. The thirsty camel’s way of drinking is when the name of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, is not mentioned.’”

The Words to Say When Drinking Water

1607. hadíth Majlisī: صحيح

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَشْرَبُ الشَّرْبَةَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَيُدْخِلُهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِهَا الْجَنَّةَ قُلْتُ وَ كَيْفَ ذَاكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يَشْرَبُ الْمَاءَ فَيَقْطَعُهُ ثُمَّ يُنَحِّي الْإِنَاءَ وَ هُوَ يَشْتَهِيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ثُمَّ يَعُودُ فِيهِ وَ يَشْرَبُ ثُمَّ يُنَحِّيهِ وَ هُوَ يَشْتَهِيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ثُمَّ يَعُودُ فَيَشْرَبُ فَيُوجِبُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَهُ بِذَلِكَ الْجَنَّةَ .

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘A man only drinks water but Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, for that reason admits him in paradise.’ I then asked, ‘How can that happen, O child of the Messenger of Allah?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The man drinks water, stops drinking, moves the bowl away when he still has the desire for water, and he praises Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious. He then drinks again, then moves the bowl of water away when he still has the desire for water, then praises Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, then drinks more water and, thus, Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, makes paradise necessary for him.’”

1608. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف على المشهور

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِذَا شَرِبَ الْمَاءَ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي سَقَانَا عَذْباً زُلَالًا وَ لَمْ يَسْقِنَا مِلْحاً أُجَاجاً وَ لَمْ يُؤَاخِذْنَا بِذُنُوبِنَا .

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when drinking water would say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who has given us cool and clear water and not of salty and foul smelling kind, and has not yet questioned us because of our sins.’”

1609. hadíth Majlisī: مجهول

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَمٍّ لِعُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ بِنْتِ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَبِيهَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِذَا شَرِبَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَاءَ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ ثُمَّ قَطَعَهُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَطَعَهُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ثُمَّ شَرِبَ فَقَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ قَطَعَهُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ سَبَّحَ ذَلِكَ الْمَاءُ لَهُ مَا دَامَ فِي بَطْنِهِ إِلَى أَنْ يَخْرُجَ .

3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from the son of uncle of ‘Umar ibn Yazid from daughter of ‘Umar ibn Yazid from her father who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘If one of you drinks water, and says , ‘In the name of Allah,’ then drinks, then stops and say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah,’ He then drinks and says, ‘In the name of Allah’ then stops, and says, ‘All praise belongs to Allah’ then drinks and says, ‘In the name of Allah’ then stops and says, ‘All praise belongs to Allah,’ that water keeps saying Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects) for him as long as it is in his belly until it goes out.’”

1610. hadíth Majlisī: مرفوع

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَشْرَبَ الْمَاءَ بِاللَّيْلِ فَحَرِّكِ الْمَاءَ وَ قُلْ يَا مَاءُ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ وَ مَاءُ فُرَاتٍ يُقْرِءَانِكَ السَّلَامَ .

4. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from in a marfu‘ manner the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When you decide to drink water during the night move the water and say, ‘O water, water of Zamzam says greeting of peace to you and so also does water of Furat.’”
