عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْمَكْفُوفِ قَالَ كَتَبْتُ إِلَيْهِ يَعْنِي أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلَ ( عليه السلام ) أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ السِّكَنْجَبِينِ وَ الْجُلَّابِ وَ رُبِّ التُّوتِ وَ رُبِّ التُّفَّاحِ وَ رُبِّ السَّفَرْجَلِ وَ رُبِّ الرُّمَّانِ فَكَتَبَ حَلَالٌ .
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas from Ja‘far ibn Ahmad al-Makfuf who has said the following: “I once wrote to him, meaning, abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, and asked about oxymel, rose water, jam of mulberry, apple, quince and pomegranate. He (the Imam) said in writing, ’It is lawful. 5 ”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ حَمْدَانَ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْمَكْفُوفِ قَالَ كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلِ ( عليه السلام ) أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ أَشْرِبَةٍ تَكُونُ قِبَلَنَا السِّكَنْجَبِينِ وَ الْجُلَّابِ وَ رُبِّ التُّوتِ وَ رُبِّ الرُّمَّانِ وَ رُبِّ السَّفَرْجَلِ وَ رُبِّ التُّفَّاحِ إِذَا كَانَ الَّذِي يَبِيعُهَا غَيْرَ عَارِفٍ وَ هِيَ تُبَاعُ فِي أَسْوَاقِنَا فَكَتَبَ جَائِزٌ لَا بَأْسَ بِهَا .
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Hamdan ibn Sulayman from Ali ibn al-Hassan from Ja‘far ibn Ahmad al-Makfuf who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan, al-Awwal (a.s.), and asked about drinks like oxymel, rose- water, jam of mulberry, pomegranate, quince and apple; if the seller is not knowledgeable when they are sold in our market places. He (the Imam) wrote, ‘It is permissible and it is not harmful. 5 ”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ خَلِيلَانَ بْنِ هِشَامٍ قَالَ كَتَبْتُ إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ عِنْدَنَا شَرَابٌ يُسَمَّى الْمَيْبَةَ نَعْمِدُ إِلَى السَّفَرْجَلِ فَنَقْشِرُهُ وَ نُلْقِيهِ فِي الْمَاءِ ثُمَّ نَعْمِدُ إِلَى الْعَصِيرِ فَنَطْبُخُهُ عَلَى الثُّلُثِ ثُمَّ نَدُقُّ ذَلِكَ السَّفَرْجَلَ وَ نَأْخُذُ مَاءَهُ ثُمَّ نَعْمِدُ إِلَى مَاءِ هَذَا الْمُثَلَّثِ وَ هَذَا السَّفَرْجَلِ فَنُلْقِي فِيهِ الْمِسْكَ وَ الْأَفَاوِيَ وَ الزَّعْفَرَانَ وَ الْعَسَلَ فَنَطْبُخُهُ حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ ثُلُثَاهُ وَ يَبْقَى ثُلُثُهُ أَ يَحِلُّ شُرْبُهُ فَكَتَبَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ مَا لَمْ يَتَغَيَّرْ .
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ibrahim ibn Mahziyar from Khalilan ibn Hisham who has said the following: “I once wrote to abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, in our area there is a drink called al-Myabeh which is taken from quince which is peeled then is placed in water. Juice (grape juice) then is boiled until one-third (is left), then the quince is crushed. Its juice then is taken. Then the one-third water and quince, musk, spices and condiment, saffron and honey are cooked until its two-thirds are evaporated and only one-third is left; if it is lawful to drink it. He (the Imam) wrote, ‘It is not unlawful as long as it is not changed. 5 ”

The Utensils in which Wine is Kept, then Vinegar is poured in it or is used for Drink
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ مُصَدِّقِ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الدَّنِّ يَكُونُ فِيهِ الْخَمْرُ هَلْ يَصْلُحُ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِيهِ خَلٌّ أَوْ مَاءٌ أَوْ كَامَخٌ أَوْ زَيْتُونٌ قَالَ إِذَا غُسِلَ فَلَا بَأْسَوَ عَنِ الْإِبْرِيقِ وَ غَيْرِهِ يَكُونُ فِيهِ الْخَمْرُ أَ يَصْلُحُ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِيهِ مَاءٌ قَالَ إِذَا غُسِلَ فَلَا بَأْسَوَ قَالَ فِي قَدَحٍ أَوْ إِنَاءٍ يُشْرَبُ فِيهِ الْخَمْرُ قَالَ تَغْسِلُهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ سُئِلَ أَ يُجْزِيهِ أَنْ يُصَبَّ الْمَاءُ فِيهِ قَالَ لَا يُجْزِيهِ حَتَّى يَدْلُكَهُ بِيَدِهِ وَ يَغْسِلَهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ .
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah from ‘Ammar ibn Musa who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a large jug in which there is wine; if it is suitable for vinegar, or water, sauce or olives. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is washed then it is not unlawful.’ I asked about a pitcher in which there is wine; if it is suitable to use it for keeping water. He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is washed then it is not harmful.’ (I asked) about a cup or bowl, which is used to drink wine, he (the Imam) said, ‘You must wash it three times.’ It was asked if just pouring water in it is sufficient. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is not sufficient until he rubs it with his hand and washes it three times.’”
أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ الْحَجَّالِ عَنْ ثَعْلَبَةَ عَنْ حَفْصٍ الْأَعْوَرِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) الدَّنُّ تَكُونُ فِيهِ الْخَمْرُ ثُمَّ يُجَفَّفُ يُجْعَلُ فِيهِ الْخَلُّ قَالَ نَعَمْ .
2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from al-Hajj al from Tha’labah from Hafs ibn al-A‘war who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about a large jug in which there is wine, then it dries up if vinegar can be kept in it. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, one can do so.’”

The Wine Placed in Vinegar
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْخَمْرِ يُصْنَعُ فِيهَا الشَّيْءُ حَتَّى تُحَمِّضَ قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ الَّذِي صُنِعَ فِيهَا هُوَ الْغَالِبُ عَلَى مَا صُنِعَ فِيهِ فَلَا بَأْسَ بِهِ .
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ibn Bukayr from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about wine to which something is done until it is turned sour. He (the Imam) said, ’If what is done in it (the wine) overwhelms it, then is not harmful/”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ جَمِيلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ وَ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ الْعَتِيقَةِ تُجْعَلُ خَلًّا قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ .
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj and ibn Bukayr from Zurarah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about al- ‘Atiqah (old) wine which is turned into vinegar. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَأْخُذُ الْخَمْرَ فَيَجْعَلُهَا خَلًّا قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ .
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from ibn Bukayr from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who takes wine and turns it into vinegar. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful.’”
عَنْهُ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْخَمْرِ تُجْعَلُ خَلًّا قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا لَمْ يُجْعَلْ فِيهَا مَا يَغْلِبُهَا .
4. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about wine which is turned into vinegar. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful if one has not placed in it what overwhelms it.’”

The Rare Ahadith
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَقْطِينٍ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَيْثَمَةَ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ عِنْدَهُ نِسَاؤُهُ قَالَ فَشَمَّ رَائِحَةَ النَّضُوحِ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا قَالُوا نَضُوحٌ يُجْعَلُ فِيهِ الصَّيَّاحُ قَالَ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَأُهَرِيقَ فِي الْبَالُوعَةِ .
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from certain persons of our people from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from Bakr ibn Muhammad from ‘Aythamah who has said the following: “I once visited abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), when his women were with him and he (the Imam) sensed a smell and asked what it was. They said, ‘It is a kind of perfume which is placed in one’s hairs.’ He (the narrator) has said, that he (the Imam) commanded to throw it in the sewage.’”
