Kinds of Sawiq (roasted flour) and the Excellence of Sawiq of Wheat

1191. hadíth Majlisī: صحيح

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ وَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُوقَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ السَّوِيقُ يَهْضِمُ الرُّءُوسَ .

10. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman and Muhammad ibn Sawqah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, sawiq digests heads (hard to digest food).”’ (See also Hadith 1 above).

1192. hadíth Majlisī: مجهول

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ مُسَاوِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ السَّوِيقُ يَجْرُدُ الْمِرَّةَ وَ الْبَلْغَمَ مِنَ الْمَعِدَةِ جَرْداً وَ يَدْفَعُ سَبْعِينَ نَوْعاً مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الْبَلَاءِ .

11. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Musa ibn al-Qasim from Yahya ibn Musawir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, sawiq removes bitterness (bile) and phlegm from the stomach and dispels seventy kinds of illness.’”

1193. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) مَنْ شَرِبَ السَّوِيقَ أَرْبَعِينَ صَبَاحاً امْتَلَأَ كَتِفَاهُ قُوَّةً .

12. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from abu ‘Abd Allah, al-Barqiy from Bakr ibn Muhammad from Khaythamah who has said the following: “If one drinks sawiq for forty mornings his shoulder will fill up with strength.’”

1194. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنِ السَّيَّارِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ كَتَبَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) مِنْ خُرَاسَانَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَا تَسْقُوا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ الثَّانِيَ السَّوِيقَ بِالسُّكَّرِ فَإِنَّهُ رَدِيٌّ لِلرِّجَالِ .

13. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Musa ibn al-Hassan from al-Sayyariy from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn abu ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), wrote from Khurasan to al-Madinah, ‘Do not make abu Ja‘far al- Thaniy to drink sawiq with sugar because it is bad for man.’ “Al-Sayyariy has explained it from ‘Ubayd Allah that it is undesirable for men because it weakens manhood desire due to its cold nature with sugar.”

1195. hadíth Majlisī: مجهول

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ سَيْفٍ التَّمَّارِ قَالَ مَرِضَ بَعْضُ رُفَقَائِنَا بِمَكَّةَ وَ بُرْسِمَ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَأَعْلَمْتُهُ فَقَالَ لِي اسْقِهِ سَوِيقَ الشَّعِيرِ فَإِنَّهُ يُعَافِي إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ وَ هُوَ غِذَاءٌ فِي جَوْفِ الْمَرِيضِقَالَ فَمَا سَقَيْنَاهُ السَّوِيقَ إِلَّا يَوْمَيْنِ أَوْ قَالَ مَرَّتَيْنِ حَتَّى عُوفِيَ صَاحِبُنَا .

14. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far from Muhammad ibn Khalid from Sayf al-Tammar who has said the following: “One of our friends became ill in Makkah and began to hallucinate. I went to see abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and informed him (the Imam) about him. He (the Imam) said, ‘Make him drink sawiq of barley; it will cure him by the will of Allah and it is the food for the stomach of patients.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘We made him drink it for two days or he said, ‘twice’ our friend was cured.’”

Sawiq of Lintels

1196. hadíth Majlisī: مجهول مرفوع

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُوسَى رَفَعَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ قَالَ سَوِيقُ الْعَدَسِ يَقْطَعُ الْعَطَشَ وَ يُقَوِّي الْمَعِدَةَ وَ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ دَاءً وَ يُطْفِئُ الصَّفْرَاءَ وَ يُبَرِّدُ الْجَوْفَ وَ كَانَ إِذَا سَافَرَ ( عليه السلام ) لَا يُفَارِقُهُ وَ كَانَ يَقُولُ ( عليه السلام ) إِذَا هَاجَ الدَّمُ بِأَحَدٍ مِنْ حَشَمِهِ قَالَ لَهُ اشْرَبْ مِنْ سَوِيقِ الْعَدَسِ فَإِنَّهُ يُسَكِّنُ هَيَجَانَ الدَّمِ وَ يُطْفِئُ الْحَرَارَةَ .

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Musa in a marfu‘ manner has said, the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, sawiq of lintels calms down thirst, makes the stomach strong and there is cure for seventy illnesses in it. It abolishes yellowish fluid and gives coolness to the stomach. He (the Imam) would not travel without it. He (the Imam) said that when blood becomes excited with any of one’s associates, he (the Imam) said, ‘Drink sawiq of lintels because it calms down the excitement of blood and extinguishes the heat.’”*

1197. hadíth Majlisī: صحيح

وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ قَالَ إِنَّ جَارِيَةً لَنَا أَصَابَهَا الْحَيْضُ وَ كَانَ لَا يَنْقَطِعُ عَنْهَا حَتَّى أَشْرَفَتْ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ فَأَمَرَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) أَنْ تُسْقَى سَوِيقَ الْعَدَسِ فَسُقِيَتْ فَانْقَطَعَ عَنْهَا وَ عُوفِيَتْ .

2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn Mahziyar from who has said the following: “We had a girl whose Hayd (menses) would not stop and she was about to die. Abu Ja’far (a.s.), instructed to make her drink sawiq of lintels. She used the drink, the bleeding stopped and she was cured.’”

1198. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ السَّيَّارِيِّ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ بِسْطَامَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ مَرْوَ قَالَ بَعَثَ إِلَيْنَا الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) وَ هُوَ عِنْدَنَا يَطْلُبُ السَّوِيقَ فَبَعَثْنَا إِلَيْهِ بِسَوِيقٍ مَلْتُوتٍ فَرَدَّهُ وَ بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّ السَّوِيقَ إِذَا شُرِبَ عَلَى الرِّيقِ وَ هُوَ جَافٌّ أَطْفَأَ الْحَرَارَةَ وَ سَكَّنَ الْمِرَّةَ وَ إِذَا لُتَّ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ .

3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Sayyariy from Ibrahim ibn Bitam from a man of the people of Marv who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), once sent to us someone asking for sawiq and we sent to him (the Imam) sawiq mixed with ghee or oil. He (the Imam) returned it saying, ‘If one takes dry sawiq before breakfast it dispels temperature, calms down bitterness but when it is mixed it then does not have that effect.’”

Excellence of Meat

1199. hadíth Majlisī: صحيح

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ سَيِّدِ الْآدَامِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ فَقَالَ اللَّحْمُ أَ مَا سَمِعْتَ قَوْلَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ لَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ .

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), about the master curries in this world and in the next life. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is meat. Have you not heard the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . meat of bird from that which they desire. 5 (56:21)”

1200. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْعَلَوِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) اللَّحْمُ سَيِّدُ الطَّعَامِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ .

2. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Isa ibn ‘Abd Allah al-‘Alawiy from his father from his grandfather who has said the following: “Ali (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Meat is the master food in this world and in the next life. 5 ”
