Saving for One’s Living Expenses

241. hadíth Majlisī: مجهول

2- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ الذُّهْلِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْمَدَائِنِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) إِنَّ النَّفْسَ إِذَا أَحْرَزَتْ قُوتَهَا اسْتَقَرَّتْ.

2. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from abu Muhammad al-Dhuhliy from abu Ayyub al-Mad’iniy from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al- Rahman from ibn Bukayr from abu al-Hassan (a.s.), who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘When a soul reserves its sustenance it settles down.”

242. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

17- 3- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْعَدَةَ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ سَلْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ إِنَّ النَّفْسَ قَدْ تَلْتَاثُ عَلَى صَاحِبِهَا إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهَا مِنَ الْعَيْشِ مَا تَعْتَمِدُ عَلَيْهِ فَإِذَا هِيَ أَحْرَزَتْ مَعِيشَتَهَا اطْمَأَنَّتْ.

3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah ibn Sadaqah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that Salman, may Allah be pleased with him, has said, ‘The soul disturbs its owner when he does not have dependable sustenance; but upon reserving sustenance his soul becomes comfortable and settled.”

Detestability of Offering Oneself for Hire

243. hadíth Majlisī: مختلف فيه وآخره مرسل

1- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ بَزِيعٍ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ يُونُسَ عَنِ الْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ مَنْ آجَرَ نَفْسَهُ فَقَدْ حَظَرَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ الرِّزْقَ وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى وَكَيْفَ لا يَحْظُرُهُ وَمَا أَصَابَ فِيهِ فَهُوَ لِرَبِّهِ الَّذِي آجَرَهُ.

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Isma’il ibn Bazi’ from Mansur ibn Yunus from al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ’One who offers himself for hire prohibits sustenance to himself . 5 In another Hadith it is said that how can it be anything other than prohibition when whatever one finds goes to his master? 5 ”

244. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف على المشهور

2- عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الإجَارَةِ فَقَالَ صَالِحٌ لا بَأْسَ بِهِ إِذَإ نَصَحَ قَدْرَ طَاقَتِهِ قَدْ آجَرَ مُوسَى (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) نَفْسَهُ وَاشْتَرَطَ فَقَالَ إِنْ شِئْتُ ثَمَانِيَ وَإِنْ شِئْتُ عَشْراً فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِيهِ أَنْ تَأْجُرَنِي ثَمانِيَ حِجَجٍ فَإِنْ أَتْمَمْتَ عَشْراً فَمِنْ عِنْدِكَ.

2. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from ibn Sinan who said: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a man who places himself for hire, and he said, 'It is permissible and there is no harm in it as long as he is sincere to the best of his ability. Musa (as) placed himself for hire and stipulated, saying, "If you wish, [I will work] for eight years, and if you wish, for ten." And Allah, the Exalted, revealed concerning this: 'That you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, that will be [a favor] from you.' (28:27)“

245. hadíth Majlisī: موثق على الظاهر

3- أَحْمَدُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ عَمَّارٍ السَّابَاطِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) الرَّجُلُ يَتَّجِرُ فَإِنْ هُوَ آجَرَ نَفْسَهُ أُعْطِيَ مَا يُصِيبُ فِي تِجَارَتِهِ فَقَالَ لا يُؤَاجِرْ نَفْسَهُ وَلَكِنْ يَسْتَرْزِقُ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَيَتَّجِرُ فَإِنَّهُ إِذَا آجَرَ نَفْسَهُ حَظَرَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ الرِّزْقَ.

3. Ahmad his has narrated from his father from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr from al-Sabatiy who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who places himself for hire; if what he achieves he has to give it all. He (the Imam) said, ‘He should not place himself for hire; instead ask sustenance from Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, and himself do business, because if one places himself for hire he prohibits sustenance upon himself . 555

Performing Personally one’s Business Tasks

246. hadíth Majlisī: مرسل

1- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) أَنَّهُ قَالَ بَاشِرْ كِبَارَ أُمُورِكَ بِنَفْسِكَ وَكِلْ مَا شَفَّ إِلَى غَيْرِكَ قُلْتُ ضَرْبَ أَيِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ قَالَ ضَرْبَ أَشْرِيَةِ الْعَقَارِ وَمَا أَشْبَهَهَا.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd from Yunus from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that you must do the greater tasks of your affairs personally and assign others to perform the easier ones. I then asked, ’Like what kinds of tasks are they?’ He (the Imam) answered, ’Like real estate deals and similar tasks.”’

247. hadíth Majlisī: مجهول

2- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ الْجَهْمِ عَنِ الأرْقَطِ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) لا تَكُونَنَّ دَوَّاراً فِي الأسْوَاقِ وَلا تَلِي دَقَائِقَ الأشْيَاءِ بِنَفْسِكَ فَإِنَّهُ لا يَنْبَغِي لِلْمَرْءِ الْمُسْلِمِ ذِي الْحَسَبِ وَالدِّينِ أَنْ يَلِيَ شِرَاءَ دَقَائِقِ الأشْيَاءِ بِنَفْسِهِ مَا خَلا ثَلاثَةَ أَشْيَاءَ فَإِنَّهُ يَنْبَغِي لِذِي الدِّينِ وَالْحَسَبِ أَنْ يَلِيَهَا بِنَفْسِهِ الْعَقَارَ وَالرَّقِيقَ وَالإبِلَ.

2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from ‘Amr ibn Ibrahim from Khalaf ibn Hammad from Harun ibn al-Jahm from al-Arqat who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), once said to me, ‘You must not roam around in market places and you must not perform small tasks personally; it is not proper for a Muslim man of good position and religion to buy small things personally, except three kinds of items, in which case a person of good position and religion should personally perform, such as real estate, slaves and camels.’”

248. hadíth Majlisī: صحيح

1- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ مُعَمَّرِ بْنِ خَلادٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى جَعْفَراً (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) شَبِيهاً بِالْمُسْتَنْصِحِ لَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ كَيْفَ صِرْتَ اتَّخَذْتَ الأمْوَالَ قِطَعاً مُتَفَرِّقَةً وَلَوْ كَانَتْ فِي مَوْضِعٍ [وَاحِدٍ] كَانَتْ أَيْسَرَ لِمَئُونَتِهَا وَأَعْظَمَ لِمَنْفَعَتِهَا فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) اتَّخَذْتُهَا مُتَفَرِّقَةً فَإِنْ أَصَابَ هَذَا الْمَالَ شَيْ‏ءٌ سَلِمَ هَذَا الْمَالُ وَالصُّرَّةُ تُجْمَعُ بِهَذَا كُلِّهِ.

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Mu’ammar ibn Khallad who has said the following: “I heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘Once a man came to Ja‘far (a.s.), as if giving him good advice; he said, ‘O abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, why have you made the properties in scattered pieces? Had they been in one piece, more profit with fewer expenses could have been made? Abu ‘Abd Allah, Alayhi al-Salam, replied, ‘I have kept them scattered so that if losses affect one piece, others remain unaffected, but a bag keeps all of them together (vulnerable to losses).”’

249. hadíth Majlisī: حسن

2- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ مَا يُخَلِّفُ الرَّجُلُ شَيْئاً أَشَدَّ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْمَالِ الصَّامِتِ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ بِهِ قَالَ يَجْعَلُهُ فِي الْحَائِطِ يَعْنِي فِي الْبُسْتَانِ أَوِ الدَّارِ.

2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from the one whom he has mentioned (in his book) from Zurarah from Abu ‘Abdillah (AS) who said, "The most difficult property to protect is of the silent kind (gold and silver).’ I then asked, ‘What should one do about it?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘One should keep them inside walls, a garden or a house.’"

250. hadíth Majlisī: مرسل كالموثق

3- حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ دَعَانِي جَعْفَرٌ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) فَقَالَ بَاعَ فُلانٌ أَرْضَهُ فَقُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ مَكْتُوبٌ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ أَنَّهُ مَنْ بَاعَ أَرْضاً أَوْ مَاءً وَلَمْ يَضَعْهُ فِي أَرْضٍ أَوْ مَاءٍ ذَهَبَ ثَمَنُهُ مَحْقاً.

3. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban ibn ‘Uthman who has said the following: “Once Ja‘far, Alayhi al-Salam, called me and asked, ‘Has so and so sold his land?’ I replied, ‘Yes, he has done so.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is written in the Torah that whoever sells a piece of land or water and does not replace it by another piece of land or water, its price (money received) loses its blessings.”
