Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar (ra) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa from al-`Abbas b. Ma`ruf from Hammad b. `Isa from Hariz b. `Abdullah or another person. He said: A group from the Juhayna [tribe] visited Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) and he hosted them. When they journeyed there, he supplied them, connected them, and gave to them. Then, he said to his servant: Step aside and do not assist them [when they leave]. When they left, they came to him to bid him farewell. So, they said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! You have hosted us and beautified your hosting, and you have provided for us and hastened your giving, yet you have commanded your servant to not assist us for our journey. So, he (as) said: We are the People of a House that does not assist its guests in their journey away from us.

Then, he said: O Messenger of Allah! I wept, but the tears did not flow out of my eyes. He said: Then, I will repeat it to you, and whoever weeps will have Paradise. He said: So, he repeated it to them, and the community and the youth wept, so they all went to Paradise.

Muhammad (as) and said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! What do you say regarding the Quran? So, he said: It is the word of Allah, the saying of Allah, the Book of Allah, the inspiration of Allah and His revelation. It is the Glorious Book, and falsehood cannot come to it from before it or from behind it; a revelation from the Wise, the Praiseworthy.

Ahmad b. Ziyad b. Ja`far al-Hamadani (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim from `Ali b. Mu`abbad from al-Husayn b. Khalid. He said: I said to al-Rida (as): O son of the Messenger of Allah! Inform me about the Quran: is it the Creator, or is it created? So, he said: It is not the Creator, nor is it created, but rather it is the words of Allah.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us from his father from Ibrahim b. Hashim from al-Rayyan b. al-Salt. He said: I said to al-Rida (as): What do you say regarding the Quran? So, he said: It is the word of Allah. Do not go beyond it, and do not seek guidance in other than it, or you will be misguided.

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Isa b. `Ubayd al-Yaqtini narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Muhammad b. `Ali b. Musa al-Rida (as) wrote to one of his Shi`a in Baghdad: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. May Allah protect us and you from sedition, for if He does, then it will be a great blessing! If He does not, then that is perdition. We see the argumentation regarding the [createdness of the] Quran as an innovation (bid`a) in which the questioner and the answerer are partners in. The questioner engages in that which is not his [to engage in], and the answerer assigns [to himself] that which is not incumbent to him. There is no creator but Allah, and everything other than Him is created. The Quran is the words of Allah, so do not give it a name from yourself, lest you be from the misguided. May Allah make us and you of those who fear their Lord with regards to the unseen, as they are in awe of the Hour.

`Ali b. Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from his grandfather Ahmad b. Abi `Abdullah from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Faddal from `Ali b. `Uqba from his father from Sulayman b. Khalid from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his grandfather (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) laughed one day until his molar teeth could be seen. Then, he said: Will you not ask me why I laughed? They said: Of course, O Messenger of Allah. He said: I am astonished at the affair of the Muslim person: there is nothing that Allah decides for him except that it is good for him in the end of his affair.

Sinan from Ziyad b. al-Mundhir from Sa`d b. Turayf from al-Asbagh b. Nubata. He said: I heard Amir al-Mu’minin `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) say: I asked the Messenger of Allah (s) about the characteristics of the believer. So, he (s) lowered his head, then raised it and said: In the believer there are twenty characteristics. Whoever does not have them in him, his faith has not been perfected. O `Ali! Surely, the believers are those who (1) attend prayers, (2) hasten to zakat, (3) go on Hajj to the Sacred House of Allah, (4) fast in the month of Ramadan, (5) feed the needy, (6) feel the heads of orphans, (7) cleanse their nails, (8) cautiously cover their privates, (9) when they speak, they do not lie, (10) when they promise, they do not break it, (11) when they are entrusted, they do not betray, (12) when they speak, they are honest, (13) are monks at night, (14) are lions in the day, (15) fast during the day, (16) stand in prayer during the night, (17) do not harm a neighbour, (18) no neighbour is harmed through him, (19) walk gently on the earth, (20) walk to the houses of widows and follow funeral processions. May Allah make us and you from the Godfearing.

Al-Husayn b. Ahmad b. Idris (ra) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Abd al-Jabbar narrated to us from Abi Ahmad Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi. He said: Isma`il b. al-Fadl narrated to us from his father from Thabit b. Dinar from Sa`id b. Jubayr from Ibn `Abbas. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Surely, Allah revealed to me that He is giving me a brother, inheritor, vicegerent (khalifa), and deputy from my Nation. So, I said: “O Lord! Who is he?” So, He revealed to me: “O Muhammad! He is the Imam of your Nation and My Proof over it after you.” So, I said: “O Lord, who is it?” So, He revealed to me: “O Muhammad! He is the one I love and the one who loves Me. He is the striver in My way, and the fighter of those who break My covenant, those who deviate from My judgment, and those who apostatize from My religion. He is truly My friend, the husband of your daughter, and the father of your descendants: `Ali b. Abi Talib.”
