The Fifty-Forth Assembly, the Assembly of Tuesday, the First of Rabi` al-Akhir, 368 AH.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur (ra) narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from his uncle `Abdullah b. `Amer from Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi from Ibrahim b. Ziyad al-Karkhi from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: There are three signs to a son of adultery: (1) Poor treatment [of people], (2) a longing for adultery, (3) and hatred for us, the Ahl al-Bayt.

And by this isnad. He said: Al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) said: If one prays five times in congregation in the day and night, then think well of him, and accept his testimony.

`Ali b. Ahmad b. Musa al-Daqqaq (ra) and `Ali b. `Abdullah al-Warraq together narrated to us. They said: Muhammad b. Harun al-Sufi narrated to us. He said: Abu Turab `Ubaydullah b. Musa al-Rawyani narrated to us from `Abd al-Athim b. `Abdullah al-Hasani. He said: I visited my Master `Ali b. Muhammad b. `Ali b. Musa b. Ja`far b. Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. `Ali b. Abi Talib (as). When he saw me, he said to me: Greetings to you, Aba’l Qasim. You are truly our friend. He said: I said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! I wish to present you my religion. If it is pleasing, then I will remain steadfast upon it until I meet Allah. So, he said: Give it to me, Aba’l Qasim. So, I said: I say that Allah is One and there is nothing like unto Him. He is free from two limits: (1) The limit of negation, and (2) the limit of similarity [to creation]. He does not have a body, nor a form, nor a size, nor a substance. Rather, He is the creator of bodies, the former of forms, and the creator of sizes and substances. He is the Lord, Master, Creator, and Initiator of all things. And [I say that] Muhammad is His Servant, His Messenger, and the Seal of Prophets. There is no prophet after him until the Day of Resurrection. His Law (shari`a) is the Seal of Laws, and there is no Law after it until the Day of Resurrection. And I say that the Imam, Caliph, and Master of the Order after him is the Commander of the Faithful `Ali b. Abi Talib [a], then al-Hasan, then al-Husayn, then `Ali b. al-Husayn, then Muhammad b. `Ali, then Ja`far b. Muhammad, then Musa b. Ja`far, then `Ali b. Musa, then Muhammad b. `Ali, then you, my master. So, `Ali (as) said: And after me is my son al-Hasan, so what will the people do with the successor after him? He said: So, I said: Why, my master? He said: Because his person will not be seen, nor will it be permissible to say his name until he appears, when he fills the Earth with equity and justice just as it would be fraught with injustice and oppression. I said: I accept. And I say that their friends are the friends of Allah, and their enemies are the enemies of Allah, and their obedience is the obedience of Allah, and their disobedience is the disobedience of Allah. And I say that the ascension (mi`raj) is true, and the questioning at the grave is true, and Paradise is true, and Hellfire is true, and the Path is true, and the Scale is true, and that the Hour is coming and that there is no doubt in it, and that Allah will resurrect those in their graves. And I say that the obligatory tasks after wilaya are prayer, zakat, fasting, Hajj, jihad, enjoining in the established virtues, and forbidding what is evil. So `Ali b. Muhammad (as) said: O Aba’l Qasim! This, by Allah, is the religion of Allah that He has chosen for His servants, so be steadfast upon it. May Allah make you steadfast upon the steadfast doctrine in this world and in the Hereafter.

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa narrated to us from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. al-Faddal from `Ali b. `Uqba from his father from Abi Basir from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father (as). Anger was mentioned in his presence, so he said: Surely, a man becomes angry until nothing pleases him, and he enters the Fire due to that. When a man becomes angry while he is standing, he should sit, for that would cleanse him of the wrath of Satan. If he is sitting, he should stand. If a man gets angry at a blood-relative, then he should go to him, get near him, and touch him; for if a blood-relative touches a blood-relative [lawfully] he settles down.

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi’l Khattab narrated to us from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. al-Faddal from al-Muthanna from Layth b. Abi Sulaym. He said: I heard a man from the Ansar say: We were with the Messenger of Allah (s), shaded by the shade of a tree on an intensely hot day, when a man came, removed [some of] his clothes, and rolled in the scorching heat. He was on his back once, on his stomach once, and on his side once, saying: “O self! Taste this, for what is with Allah is greater than what you have done to yourself!” So, the Messenger of Allah (s) was looking at what he was doing. Then, the man put on his clothes and came forward. So, the Prophet (s) gestured to him with his hand and called to him. So, he said to him: O servant of Allah! I have seen you do something that I have not seen any one of the people do. So, what caused you to do what you did? So, the man said: My fear of Allah caused me to do this. I said to myself: “O self! Taste this, for what is with Allah is greater than what you have done to yourself!” So, the Prophet (s) said: You have feared your Lord as He is to be rightly feared. Your Lord is boasting about you to the people of heaven. Then, he said to his companions: O you who are present! Come closer to your companion so that he may pray for you. So, they came closer to him, and he prayed for them, saying: O Allah! Gather our affairs upon guidance, increase us in God-consciousness and make Paradise our home.

The Fifty-Fifth Assembly, the Assembly of Friday, the Fourth of the Month of Rabi` al-Akhir, 368 AH.

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (ra) narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattan and `Ali b. Ahmad b. Musa al-Daqqaq and Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani (ra) narrated to us. They said: Abu’l `Abbas Ahmad b. Yahya b. Zakariyya al-Qattan narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-`Abbas narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi al-Sirri narrated to me. He said: Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Yunus narrated to us from Sa`d b. Turayf al-Kinani from al-Asbagh b. Nubata. He said: When `Ali (as) assumed the Caliphate and the people pledged their allegiance to him, he went out to the Mosque turbaned in the turban of the Messenger of Allah (s), cloaked in the cloak of the Messenger of Allah (s), wearing the sandals of the Messenger of Allah (s), and equipped with the sword of the Messenger of Allah (s). So, he climbed the pulpit and sat upon it masterfully. Then, he folded his hands and placed them under his stomach. Then, he said: O people! Ask me before you lose me. This is the vessel of knowledge. This is the saliva of the Messenger of Allah (s). This is the sustenance that the Messenger of Allah (s) has sustained me with. Ask me, for I have the knowledge of the former and latter peoples. By Allah, if a cushion were folded for me, I could give judgments to the people of the Torah with their Torah until the Torah is made to say: “`Ali has spoken the truth and he has not lied. He has given you judgments by that which Allah has revealed”; and I could give judgments to the people of the Gospel with their Gospel until the Gospel is made to say: “`Ali has spoken the truth and he has not lied. He has given you judgments by that which Allah has revealed”; and I could give judgments to the people of the Quran with their Quran until the Quran is made to say: “`Ali has spoken the truth and he has not lied. He has given you judgments by that which Allah has revealed.” You recite the Quran night and day, so, is there one of you who knows what was revealed in it? If it were not for one verse in the Book of Allah, I could have informed you of what was, what will be, and what is, until the Day of Resurrection; and it is this verse, “Allah erases what He wishes and confirms, and with Him is the Mother of the Book.” (13:39) Then, he (as) said: Ask me before you lose me, for by Him who split the seed and gave life, if you were to ask me about any verse – whether it were revealed in the night or revealed in the day, in Mecca or in Medina, while travelling or while present; whether it is abrogating or abrogated, decisive or allegorical; or about its interpretation or its exegesis – I would have informed you of it. So, a man named Dha`lab, who had a sharp tongue, who was eloquent in speech, and who had a bold heart, said: Ibn Abi Talib has risen to a difficult station, so I will embarrass him today in my questions posed to him. So, he said: O Amir al-Mu’minin! Have you seen your Lord? So, he said: Woe to you, Dha`lab, I am not one who would worship a Lord that I haven not seen. He said: So, how did you see Him? Describe Him to us. He said: Woe to you! Eyes do not see Him by way of sight, but rather, hearts see Him by the realities of faith. Woe to you, Dha`lab, surely, my Lord is not described with proximity, nor with movement, nor with stillness, nor with standing – standing physically – nor with coming, nor with going. He is the Most Subtle of the subtle, but He is not described with subtlety. He is the Most Great of the great, but He is not described with greatness. He is the Most Grand of the grand, but He is not described with grandness. He is the Most Majestic of the majestic, but He is not described with difficulty. He is kind in mercy, but He is not described with gentleness; the Protector, but not [gained] through worship. He perceives, but not through touching. He speaks, but not through pronouncement. He is in the things, but not interwoven, and He is outside of them, but not contrasting. He is above everything, and nothing is to be said to be above Him. He is in front of everything, but He is not to be said to be in front. He is inside the things, but not like a thing inside another thing. He is outside the things, but not like a thing outside another thing. So, Dha`lab fell unconscious. Then, [he awoke] and said: By Allah, I have never heard an answer like this. By Allah, I will not repeat [a question] like it. Then, he (as) said: Ask me before you lose me. So, al-Ash`ath b. Qays went to him and said: O Amir al-Mu’minin! Why is the jizya taken from the Zoroastrians when no Book was revealed to them and no prophet was sent to them? So, he said: O Ash`ath! Allah revealed a Book to them and sent a prophet to them. They had a king who was drunk one night. He called his daughter to his bed and had intercourse with her. When he awoke, his people had heard what had happened and had gathered at his door. So, they said: “O king! You have dirtied our religion and you have destroyed it. Get out, so that we may purify you by establishing the penalty on you.” So, he said to them: “Gather and listen to my words. If there is no way out for me, then do as you wish.” So, they gathered. So, he said to them: “Do you know that Allah did not create a creation more noble than our father Adam and our mother Hawwa’?” They said: “You have spoken the truth, king.” He said: “Did he not marry his sons to his daughters, and his daughters to his sons?” They said: “You have spoken the truth. This is the religion.” So, they contracted [marriages] based on that. So, Allah erased knowledge from their hearts and raised the Book from them, so they became disbelievers who enter the Fire without judgment – and the hypocrites are in a more severe condition than them. So, al-Ash`ath said: By Allah, I have never heard an answer like this. By Allah, I will not repeat [a question] like it. Then, he (as) said: Ask me before you lose me. So, a man from the furthest end of the Mosque came to him, leaning on a staff. He did not stop surpassing the people until he came close to him and said: O Amir al-Mu’minin! Lead me to a practice which, if I did it, Allah would deliver me from the Fire. So, he said to him: Listen, so-and-so, then understand, then ascertain. The world is upheld by three: a speaking scholar whose knowledge is acted upon, a wealthy person who is not stingy in his wealth with the people of the religion of Allah, and patient poor person. If the scholar hides his knowledge, and the wealthy becomes stingy, and the poor person is not patient, then at that will be woe and devastation. At that, those that know Allah will know that the abode will revert to its incipience – meaning, to disbelief after faith. O asker! Do not be deceived by the number of mosques, nor by the gatherings of people who are united in their bodies but disunited in their hearts. O people! Surely, there are only three types of people: the ascetic, the hedonist, and the patient. As for the ascetic, he is not gladdened by anything of the world that comes to him, nor is he saddened by anything of the world that misses him. As for the patient, he wishes for it (the world) in his heart, but when he comes by anything of it, he avoids it because he knows its evil consequences. As for the hedonist, he does not mind taking it lawfully or unlawfully. He said: O Amir al-Mu’minin! What is the sign of the believer in that time? He said: He looks to what Allah has obliged him and he fulfills it, and he looks to what is contrary to it and dissociates from it, even if it is beloved and near to him. He said: You have spoken the truth, by Allah, O Amir al-Mu’minin. Then, the man disappeared, and we did not see him. The people went out looking for him, but they did not see him. So, `Ali (as) smiled on the pulpit and said: What are you doing? This is my brother al-Khidr (as). Then, he (as) said: Ask me before you lose me. So, no one went to him. So, he praised Allah and commended Him, blessed His Prophet (s), then said to al-Hasan (as): O Hasan! Stand, climb the pulpit, and speak, so that Quraysh are not ignorant of you after me, lest they say: “Al-Hasan has not beautified (yuhsin) anything.” Al-Hasan (as) said: O father! How can I climb [the pulpit] and speak when you are among the people listening and watching? He said: May my mother and my father be your sacrifice! I will hide myself from you, so you will neither hear nor see me. So, al-Hasan (as) climbed the pulpit, praised Allah in an eloquent and honourable way, blessed the Prophet and his Family briefly, then said: O people! I heard my grandfather the Messenger of Allah (s) say: “I am the City of Knowledge and `Ali is its Gate. A city can only be entered by its gate.” Then, he descended; and `Ali (as) leapt toward him, embraced him, and held him to his chest. Then, he said to al-Husayn (as): O my son! Stand, climb the pulpit, and speak, so that the Quraysh are not ignorant of you after me, lest they say: “Al-Husayn b. `Ali has no insight in anything”, and so that your words may follow your brother’s. So, al-Husayn climbed, praised Allah and commended Him, blessed His Prophet and his Family briefly, then said: O people! I heard the Messenger of Allah (s) say: “Surely, `Ali is the City of Guidance. Whoever enters it is saved, and whoever turns away from it is destroyed.” So, `Ali (as) leapt toward him, embraced him, and held him to his chest. Then, he said: O people! Bear witness that these two are the younglings of the Messenger of Allah (s) whom he entrusted to me, and I am entrusting them to you. O people! The Messenger of Allah (s) will question you regarding them.

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from Ayyub b. Nuh from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Muthanna b. al-Walid al-Hannat from Abi Basir. He said: Abu `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) said to me: Do you become sad, worry, and suffer? I said: Of course, by Allah. He said: When that happens, then remember death, your solitude in your grave, the streaming of your eyes onto your cheeks, the breaking of your joints, the worms eating your flesh, your misfortunes, and your cutting off from this world; for that is what prompts you to perform deeds and deters you from much of the protectiveness over this world.

Ahmad b. `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from Muhammad b. Yahya al-Kath`ami from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: Aba Dharr (rh) passed by the Messenger of Allah (s) while Gabriel (as) was with him in the form of Dihya al-Kalbi. The Messenger of Allah (s) was paying attention to him. When he saw them both [together], he left them alone without breaking their conversation. So, Gabriel (as) said: O Muhammad! This Abu Dharr passed by us, but he did not deliver his salaam to us. Had he delivered his salaam to us, we would have returned his greeting. O Muhammad! He has a supplication that he uses that is known to the people of heaven. When I ascend to heaven, ask him about it. So, when Gabriel (as) was raised up, Abu Dharr came to the Prophet (s), so the Messenger of Allah (s) said: What prevented you, Aba Dharr, from delivering your salaam to us when you passed by us? So, he said: I thought, O Messenger of Allah, that the one with you was Dihya al-Kalbi, and that you were discussing a private matter. So, he said: That was Gabriel (as), Aba Dharr, and he said: “Had he delivered his salaam to us, we would have returned his greeting.” When Abu Dharr learned that it was Gabriel (as), he entered a state of regret – as much as Allah willed – for not delivering his salaam. So, the Messenger of Allah (s) said to him: What is this supplication that you supplicate with? He informed me that you have a supplication that is known in heaven. He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. I say: “O Allah! I ask You for faith in You and affirmation of Your Prophet, and wellness from every calamity, and thankfulness at wellness, and needlessness from the most evil of people (Allahumma inni as’alukal iman bika wal tasdiq bi nabiyyik, wal `afiyatu min jami`il bala’, wal shukr `alal `afiya, wal ghina `an sharer al-nas).”

So, he said to him: You have made brotherhood bonds between your companions, but you have left me out. So, he said: By He in whose hand is my soul! I have not left you to yourself. You are my brother, my deputy, and my inheritor. He said: What will I inherit from you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: What the prophets have inherited before me. They inherit the Book of their Lord and the tradition (sunna) of their prophet. You and your sons will be with me in my palace in Paradise.
