Thawāb al-Aʿmāl wa ʿiqāb al-Aʿmāl

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِیسَی عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِی نَصْرٍ الْبَزَنْطِیِّ عَنْ أَبَانٍ الْأَحْمَرِ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص خَمْسٌ إِذَا أَدْرَکْتُمُوهُنَّ فَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْهُنَّ لَمْ تَظْهَرِ الْفَاحِشَهُ فِی قَوْمٍ قَطُّ حَتَّی یُعْلِنُوهَا إِلَّا وَ ظَهَرَ فِیهِمُ الطَّاعُونُ وَ الْأَوْجَاعُ الَّتِی لَمْ تَکُنْ فِی أَسْلَافِهِمُ الَّذِینَ مَضَوْا وَ لَمْ یَنْقُصُوا الْمِکْیَالَ وَ الْمِیزَانَ إِلَّا أُخِذُوا بِالسِّنِینَ وَ شِدَّهِ الْمَئُونَهِ وَ جَوْرِ السُّلْطَانِ وَ لَمْ یَمْنَعُوا الزَّکَاهَ إِلَّا مُنِعُوا الْمَطَرَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ لَوْ لَا الْبَهَائِمُ لَمْ یُمْطَرُوا وَ لَمْ یَنْقُضُوا عَهْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ عَهْدَ رَسُولِهِ إِلَّا سَلَّطَ اللَّهُ عَلَیْهِمْ عَدُوَّهُمْ فَأَخَذُوهُمْ بَعْضَ مَا فِی أَیْدِیهِمْ وَ لَمْ یَحْکُمُوا بِغَیْرِ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا جَعَلَ بَأْسَهُمْ بَیْنَهُمْ.

2. Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) narrates that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “There are five things from which you should seek Allah’s refuge. When people of a community start sinning openly, epidemic plagues, which were not destined for them earlier, become common. When people start cheating in weight, they have to face drought and oppression of an unjust ruler. When Zakat is not paid, rainfall is reduced and they would not have received rain had there been no animal among them. When the oaths of Allah and promises to His Messenger are broken, the Almighty Allah gives their control to their enemies. He takes away whatever is present with them. When people act without obeying Allah’s commands, He sends His chastisement on them.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَلِیُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِیمَ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِیِّ عَنِ السَّکُونِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص سَیَأْتِی فِی أُمَّتِی زَمَانٌ تَخْبُثُ فِیهِ سَرَائِرُهُمْ وَ تَحْسُنُ فِیهِ عَلَانِیَتُهُمْ طَمَعاً فِی الدُّنْیَا لَا یُرِیدُونَ بِهِ مَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ یَکُونُ أَمْرُهُمْ رِیَاءً لَا یُخَالِطُهُمْ خَوْفٌ یَعُمُّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابٍ فَیَدْعُونَهُ دُعَاءَ الْغَرِیقِ فَلَا یُسْتَجَابُ لَهُمْ.

3. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) narrates that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “A time will come when my Ummah will become impure from inside and attractive from outside in order to acquire wealth. They will do showoff instead of gaining divine rewards. They will not fear Allah. Allah will punish all of them. At that time, people will supplicate like a drowning man but their supplications will not be accepted.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص سَیَأْتِی عَلَی أُمَّتِی زَمَانٌ لَا یَبْقَی مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ إِلَّا رَسْمُهُ وَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ إِلَّا اسْمُهُ یُسَمَّوْنَ بِهِ وَ هُمْ أَبْعَدُ النَّاسِ مِنْهُ مَسَاجِدُهُمْ عَامِرَهٌ وَ هِیَ خَرَابٌ مِنَ الْهُدَی فُقَهَاءُ ذَلِکَ الزَّمَانِ شَرُّ فُقَهَاءَ تَحْتَ ظِلِّ السَّمَاءِ مِنْهُمْ خَرَجَتِ الْفِتْنَهُ وَ إِلَیْهِمْ تَعُودُ.

4. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, “A time will come on my Ummah when only the name of the Holy Quran will remain. They will have only the title of Islam while they will be far away from it. Their mosques will be filled apparently but will be completely deprived of guidance. Their jurists will be worst under this sky and mischief will start from them and return to them.

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِیٍّ مَاجِیلَوَیْهِ عَنْ عَمِّهِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِی الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْکُوفِیِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ رِبْعِیٍّ عَنِ الْفُضَیْلِ بْنِ یَسَارٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: إِذَا أَخَذَ الْقَوْمُ فِی مَعْصِیَهِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَإِنْ کَانُوا رُکْبَاناً کَانُوا مِنْ خَیْلِ إِبْلِیسَ وَ إِنْ کَانُوا رَجَّالَهً کَانُوا مِنْ رَجَّالَتِهِ.

5. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Ali Majluwayh from his uncle Muhammad b. Abi al-Qasim from Muhammad b. Ali al-Kufi from Muhammad b. Sinan from Hamad b. Uthman from Khalaf b. Hamad from Rib’i from al-Fudhayl b. Yasar from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “When some people of a community start disobeying Allah, they will be the army of Iblees whether they ride or walk.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَی بْنِ الْمُتَوَکِّلِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْحِمْیَرِیُّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع یَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بَعَثَ نَبِیّاً إِلَی قَوْمٍ فَأَوْحَی اللَّهُ إِلَیْهِ قُلْ لِقَوْمِکَ إِنَّهُ لَیْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِ قَرْیَهٍ وَ لَا أَهْلِ بَیْتٍ کَانُوا عَلَی طَاعَتِی فَأَصَابَهُمْ فِیهَا شَرٌّ فَانْقَلَبُوا عَمَّا أُحِبُّ إِلَی مَا أَکْرَهُ إِلَّا تَحَوَّلْتُ لَهُمْ عَمَّا یُحِبُّونَ إِلَی مَا یَکْرَهُونَ.

6. It is narrated that Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) said, “Surely, Allah, the Mighty and Sublime sent a prophet to his community and sent revelation unto him: Tell your community that there is no city or tribe which obeys Me and is still faced with calamity. The people kept away from what I liked and chose to love what I had prohibited. At last, I have disliked what they like and loved what they disliked.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِیٍّ مَاجِیلَوَیْهِ عَنْ عَمِّهِ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْعَدَهَ بْنِ زِیَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ع أَنَّ عَلِیّاً ع قَالَ: إِنَّ فِی جَهَنَّمَ رَحًی تَطْحَنُ أَ فَلَا تَسْأَلُونِّی مَا طَحِینُهَا فَقِیلَ وَ مَا طَحِینُهَا یَا أَمِیرَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ فَقَالَ الْعُلَمَاءُ الْفَجَرَهُ وَ الْقُرَّاءُ الْفَسَقَهُ وَ الْجَبَابِرَهُ الظَّلَمَهُ وَ الْوُزَرَاءُ الْخَوَنَهُ وَ الْعُرَفَاءُ الْکَذَبَهُ وَ إِنَّ فِی النَّارِ لَمَدِینَهً یُقَالُ الْحَصِینَهُ أَ وَ لَا تَسْأَلُونِّی مَا فِیهَا فَقِیلَ لَهُ وَ مَا فِیهَا یَا أَمِیرَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ قَالَ فِیهَا بَعْضُ أَیْدِی النَّاکِثِینَ.

1. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Ali Majluwayh from his uncle from Harun b. Muslim from Mas’ada b. Ziyad from Ja’far b. Muhammad (a.s.) that Ali (a.s.) who said: “There is a punishment in Hell which horrifies everyone. Won’t you ask about that calamity?” It was asked: “O Amirul Momineen (a.s.) what calamity is it?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “They include a sinful scholar, a hypocrite reciter of Quran, a corrupt minister, false scholars and promise- breakers. There is a city named Hasiniya in Hell and won’t you inquire what is there in that city?” It was asked: “O Amirul Momineen (a.s.) what is there in it?” He replied, “It will contain the hands of those who break promises.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ یَحْیَی الْعَطَّارُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ یَعْقُوبَ بْنِ یَزِیدَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ سَعِیدٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ سَعِیدٍ الْحُلْوَانِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: بَیْنَا عِیسَی ابْنُ مَرْیَمَ ع فِی سِیَاحَتِهِ إِذْ مَرَّ بِقَرْیَهٍ فَوَجَدَ أَهْلَهَا مَوْتَی فِی الطَّرِیقِ وَ الدُّورِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ مَاتُوا بِسَخَطٍ وَ لَوْ مَاتُوا بِغَیْرِهَا تَدَافَنُوا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَصْحَابُهُ وَدِدْنَا تُعَرِّفُنَا قِصَّتَهُمْ فَقِیلَ لَهُ نَادِهِمْ یَا رُوحَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ یَا أَهْلَ الْقَرْیَهِ فَأَجَابَهُ مُجِیبٌ مِنْهُمْ لَبَّیْکَ یَا رُوحَ اللَّهِ قَالَ مَا حَالُکُمْ وَ مَا قِصَّتُکُمْ قَالَ أَصْبَحْنَا فِی عَافِیَهٍ وَ بِتْنَا فِی الْهَاوِیَهِ فَقَالَ مَا الْهَاوِیَهُ فَقَالَ بِحَارٌ مِنْ نَارٍ فِیهَا جِبَالٌ مِنَ النَّارِ قَالَ وَ مَا بَلَغَ بِکُمْ مَا أَرَی قَالَ حُبُّ الدُّنْیَا وَ عِبَادَهُ الطَّاغُوتِ قَالَ وَ مَا بَلَغَ بِکُمْ مِنْ حُبِّ الدُّنْیَا قَالَ کَحُبِّ الصَّبِیِّ لِأُمِّهِ إِذَا أَقْبَلَتْ فَرِحَ وَ إِذَا أَدْبَرَتْ حَزِنَ قَالَ وَ مَا بَلَغَ مِنْ عِبَادَتِکُمُ الطَّاغُوتَ قَالَ کَانُوا إِذَا أَمَرُونَا أَطَعْنَاهُمْ قَالَ فَکَیْفَ أَجَبْتَنِی مِنْ دُونِهِمْ قَالَ لِأَنَّهُمْ مُلْجَمُونَ بِلُجُمٍ مِنْ نَارٍ عَلَیْهِمْ مَلائِکَهٌ غِلاظٌ شِدادٌ وَ إِنَّنِی کُنْتُ فِیهِمْ وَ لَمْ أَکُنْ مِنْهُمْ فَلَمَّا أَصَابَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ أَصَابَنِی مَعَهُمْ فَأَنَا مُعَلَّقٌ بِشَعْرَهٍ أَخَافُ أَنْ أَنْکَبَّ فِی النَّارِ قَالَ فَقَالَ عِیسَی ع لِأَصْحَابِهِ النَّوْمُ عَلَی دُبُرِ الْمَزَابِلِ وَ أَکْلُ خُبْزِ الشَّعِیرِ یَسِیرٌ مَعَ سَلَامَهِ الدِّینِ.

1. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Yahya al-’Attar who said it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Ya’qub b. Yazid from Muhammad b. ’Amru from Salih b. Sa’eed from his father Sa’eed al-Halwani from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “What have you done to yourselves? What happened to you?” The person replied, “We were fine in the morning and reached Hawiya at night.” He was asked what Hawiya was. The person answered, “It is an ocean of fire having mountains of fire.” He was asked the reason for being sent to that place. He replied, “Because of the love of this world and worship of idols.” He was asked, “How much love did you have for this world?” The person replied, “We loved it as much as a child loves its mother. The child becomes happy when she comes and becomes sad when she goes away.” He was asked, “How much did you worship the devil?” He answered, “We used to obey whenever a command was given to us.” He was asked, “Why is it so that only you are replying and others are quiet?” He replied, “Because their mouths are filled with fire and angels appointed over them are torturing them severely. I used to live with them but did not act like them. The chastisement took me along with these people. Till now, I am hanging from a wire as thin as a hair. I fear that I will also fall in the fire of Hell.” Isa (a.s.) told his companions, “Sleeping on dry grass and eating barley bread is a way to save ourselves.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مَسْعَدَهَ بْنِ زِیَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ ع قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص سُئِلَ فِیمَ النَّجَاهُ غَداً قَالَ إِنَّمَا النَّجَاهُ فِی أَنْ لَا تُخَادِعُوا اللَّهَ فَیَخْدَعَکُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ یُخَادِعِ اللَّهَ یَخْدَعْهُ وَ یَنْزِعْ مِنْهُ الْإِیمَانَ وَ نَفْسَهُ تخدع [یَخْدَعُ] و لَوْ بشعره [یَشْعُرُ] قِیلَ لَهُ فَکَیْفَ یُخَادِعُ اللَّهَ قَالَ یَعْمَلُ بهما [بِمَا] أَمَرَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ثُمَّ یُرِیدُ بِهِ غَیْرَهُ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ فِی الرِّیَاءِ فَإِنَّهُ الشِّرْکُ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّ الْمُرَائِیَ یُدْعَی یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ بِأَرْبَعَهِ أَسْمَاءٍ یَا کَافِرُ یَا فَاجِرُ یَا غَادِرُ یَا خَاسِرُ حَبِطَ عَمَلُکَ وَ بَطَلَ أَجْرُکَ فَلَا خَلَاصَ لَکَ الْیَوْمَ فَالْتَمِسْ أَجْرَکَ مِمَّنْ کُنْتَ تَعْمَلُ لَهُ.

1. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) narrates from his ancestors that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) was asked, “What will have salvation on the Day of Judgment?” The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) replied, “Salvation is only and only in not cheating Allah so that He also doesn’t cheat you. Surely Allah cheats a person who cheats Him and takes faith away from him. A person should know that he has cheated himself.” The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) was asked, “How does a person cheat Allah?” He answered, “By obeying the order of Allah but for the sake of someone else. Keep away from showoff because it is polytheism. Surely, a person who does showoff will be called with four names on the Day of Judgment viz. O disbeliever, O mischief-monger, O cunning, O loser! Your deeds are wasted. Your reward was reduced continuously and there is nothing left for you today. Go and ask for the reward from one for whom you performed good deeds.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ ع أَنَّ اللَّهَ أَنْزَلَ کِتَاباً مِنْ کُتُبِهِ عَلَی نَبِیٍّ مِنَ الْأَنْبِیَاءِ وَ فِیهِ أَنْ یَکُونَ [خَلْقٌ] مِنْ خَلْقِی لمحسنون [یَلْحَسُونَ] الدُّنْیَا بِالدِّینِ یَلْبَسُونَ مُسُوحَ الضَّأْنِ عَلَی قُلُوبٍ کَقُلُوبِ الذِّئَابِ أَشَدُّ مَرَارَهً مِنَ الصَّبِرِ وَ أَلْسِنَتُهُمْ أَحْلَی مِنَ الْعَسَلِ وَ أَعْمَالُهُمُ الْبَاطِنَهُ أَنْتَنُ مِنَ الْجِیَفِ بِی تَغْتَرُّونَ أَمْ إِیَّایَ تُخَادِعُونَ أَمْ عَلَیَّ تَتَجَبَّرُونَ فَبِعِزَّتِی حَلَفْتُ لَأَبْعَثَنَّ عَلَیْهِمْ فِتْنَهً تَطَأُهُمْ فِی خِطَامِهَا حَتَّی تَبْلُغَ أَطْرَافَ الْأَرْضِ تَتْرُکُ الْحَلِیمَ مِنْهَا حَیْرَانَ فیما [فِیهَا] رَأْیُ الرَّائِی وَ حِکْمَهُ الْحَکِیمِ أَتْرُکُهُمْ شِیَعاً وَ أُذِیقُ بَعْضَهُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ أَنْتَقِمُ مِنْ أَعْدَائِی بِأَعْدَائِی فَلَا أُبَالِی.

2. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) narrates from his ancestors that Allah has said in one of the books revealed on prophets, “One of My creatures has made religion a way to acquire this world. They have the heart of a wolf and are wearing the skin of a sheep. They do not have even an iota of patience but their words are sweeter than honey. All of their hidden actions are having stench more than that of a corpse. Will they cheat Me for mercy? Or they are stepping ahead of Me? I swear by My honor that I will involve them in such a calamity that they will roll in it from one corner of earth to another. It will be wise to split them in different groups so that they take revenge from other such people over there. My enemies will take revenge from My other enemies and I will not have to worry about it at all.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ یَعْقُوبَ بْنِ یَزِیدَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِیمَ النَّوْفَلِیِّ عَنِ الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ الْمُخْتَارِ رَفَعَهُ إِلَی أَمِیرِ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ ع قَالَ: مَنْ صَنَعَ شَیْئاً لِلْمُفَاخَرَهِ حَشَرَهُ اللَّهُ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَهِ أَسْوَدَ الْوَجْهِ.

1. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Sa’d b. Abdillah from Ya’qub b. Yazid from Muhammad b. Ibrahim al-Nawfali from al-Hussain b. al-Mukhtar who raised it to Ameer al-Mumineen (a.s.) who said: “One who makes something to boast about it will be raised on Qiyamat black-faced.”
