10. My father and all of my scholars narrated to me (from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh), from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Ḥusain ibn Sa’īd, from Naďr ibn Suwayd, from Yaḥyā ibn ‘Imrān Al-Ḥalabi, from Ḥusain ibn Abil ‘Alā, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: Ḥusain (a.s.) led the (Fajr) prayer for his companions on the day on which they were assaulted and then said, “O people! I testify that permission has been granted for you to be killed, so fear Allāh and remain patient.”

11. Abul Ḥusain Muḥammad ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn ‘Ali Al-Nāqid narrated to me from ‘Abdil Raḥmān Al-Aslami, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Ḥusain, from ‘Urwah ibn Zubayr, who said: On the day when ‘Uthmān expelled Abā Dhar to Rabadhah, people said to him, “O Abā Dhar! Rejoice, for verily this (suffering) is little in the way of Allāh, the Exalted.” Abū Dhar replied: How insignificant this (suffering) is (in the way of Allāh)! But how will you feel when Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) is killed – or he said slaughtered – in such a terrible way?! I swear to Allāh that no killing will be greater than the killing of Ḥusain (a.s.) in (the history of) Islam. Verily Allāh will unsheathe His sword against this nation and He will never sheathe it again. Verily Allāh will send an avenger from the progeny of Ḥusain (a.s.) who will seek revenge against the people. I swear to Allāh that If you knew about (the grief) which will overcome the inhabitants of the seas, the mountains, the hills, the trees, and the heavens as a result of the killing of Ḥusain (a.s.), you would cry so (intensely) that your soul would leave (your bodies). Seventy thousand angels will be alarmed in every sky through which the soul of Ḥusain (a.s.) will pass (after he will be killed). They will all stand up (for him) while their joints will be shaking (in awe of Ḥusain (a.s.)) until the Day of Judgment. Every cloud that passes, each (roar of) thunder, and every (strike of) lightning curses the killers of Ḥusain (a.s.). Every day the soul of Ḥusain (a.s.) is presented to the Messenger of Allāh (s.a.a.w.) and they meet one another.

12. My father narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Muḥammad ibn ‘Abdil Jabbār, from ‘Abdil Raḥmān ibn Abī Najrān, from Ja’far ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥukaym, from ‘Abd Al-Samīn, who narrated that: (One day) while the Commander of the Believers (a.s.) was delivering a sermon to the people he said, “Ask me before you lose me! I swear to Allāh that I will answer (your questions about) anything you might ask that has happened in the past or will happen in the future.” So Sa’d ibn Abī Waqqās got up and asked, “O Commander of the Believers! Tell me about the number of hairs that I have on my head and in my beard?” The Commander of the Believers (a.s.) replied, “I swear to Allāh that my love, the Messenger of Allāh (s.a.a.w.), informed me that you would be asking me this question. There is a Shayťān rooted in every strand of hair on your head and in your beard and there is a baby sheep in your house who will kill my son, Ḥusain (a.s.).” (‘Abd Al-Samīn/Asbagh added), “’Umar ibn Sa’d (the killer of Imam Ḥusain (a.s.)) was a child then and he was playing in front of his father (Sa’d ibn Abī Waqqās).”

13. Muḥammad ibn Ja’far Al-Razzāz narrated to me from Muḥammad ibn Ḥusain ibn Abil Khaťťāb, from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā Al-Khath’ami, from Ťalḥah ibn Zayd, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), from his father (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)), from his grandfather (Imam Sajjād (a.s.)), who said: Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) said: I swear to He who has the life of Ḥusain in His Hand, that the Banī Umayyah will kill me and they will not be satisfied with their government until they kill me. Verily if they kill me, the people will never be able to pray in congregation nor will they ever be able to spend ZAKĀT (charity) in the way of Allāh again. Verily my family and I are the first ones killed by this nation. I swear to He who has the life of Ḥusain in His Hand that the Day of Judgment will not come as long as there is even one man from the Banī Hāshim who is enjoying his life. The above Ḥadīth has also been narrated to me through the following chain: My father, from Sa’d (ibn ‘Abdillāh), from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā Al-Khazzāz, from Ťalḥah (ibn Zayd), from Ja’far (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), from his father (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)), from his grandfather (Imam Sajjād (a.s.)), from Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.).

1. My father and all of my scholars narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Ḥusain ibn Sa’īd, from someone, from Yaḥyā ibn Bashīr, from Abī Basīr, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: Hishām ibn ‘Abdil Malik sent (some of his soldiers) to take my father (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) to Shām. When my father (a.s.) entered (the palace), Hishām said, “O Abā Ja’far! I have brought you here to ask you a question that should not be asked by anyone other than me. I do not think that it is possible for anyone to know of this matter nor do I think that anyone is even capable of knowing of this matter except for one man.” My father (a.s.) said, “The commander of the believers can ask me whatever he wishes. If I know the answer, I will answer it. And if I do not, I will say that I do not know, for truth is more worthy of being told.” Hishām asked: Tell me about the night on which ‘Ali ibn Abī Ťālib (a.s.) was killed. How did those who were absent from the city in which he was killed learn of his killing? And what was the sign of his death (that appeared) for the people? If you know the answer, then tell me if that sign ever reappeared at the death of anyone other than ‘Ali (a.s.). My father (a.s.) said: O commander of the believers! On the night on which the Commander of the Believers (a.s.) was killed, no rock was moved (anywhere) on earth without fresh blood being seen under it until the break of dawn. The same thing happened on the night on which Hārūn (a.s.), brother of Mūsā (a.s.), was killed. The same thing happened on the night on which Yūsha’ ibn Nūn (a.s.) was killed. The same thing happened on the night on which ‘Isā ibn Maryam (a.s.) was raised to the sky. The same thing happened on the night on which Sham’ūn ibn Ḥammūn Al-Safā (a.s.) was killed. The same thing happened on the night on which ‘Ali ibn Abī Ťālib (a.s.) was killed. The same thing happened on the night on which Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) was killed. Imam Sādiq (a.s.) continued: Hishām’s face and colour changed out of anger (when he heard this) and he was about to attack my father (a.s.). However, my father (a.s.) said, “O commander of the believers! It is obligatory for the slaves (of Allāh) to obey their Imam and to be truthful to him. That which led me to answer this question was my knowledge of the fact that I have to obey the commander of the believers. So may the commander of the believers judge me favourably!” Hishām said, “You may return to your family if you so choose.” So as my father (a.s.) was leaving, Hishām asked him to promise him not to narrate this Ḥadīth to anyone for as long as Hishām lived, to which my father (a.s.) agreed.

2. Abul Ḥusain Aḥmad ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn ‘Ali Al-Nāqid narrated to me from ‘Abdil Raḥmān Al-Balkhi, and from his uncle, from his father, from Abī Nasr, who said: A man from Bayt Al-Maqdis said, “I swear to Allāh that we, the people of Bayt Al-Maqdis and its suburbs, learned of the killing of Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) on the eve of the day on which he was killed.” I (Abū Nasr) asked, “How did they learn of it?” He replied: We did not move any rock, stone, or mud without seeing fresh, boiling blood under it. And all of the walls became red like blood. The skies rained fresh blood for three days and at night we heard a caller crying out the following poem: Does the nation that killed Ḥusain (a.s.) hope to receive the intercession of his grandfather on the Day of Judgment!? Verily Allāh forbids you to receive the intercession of Aḥmad (s.a.a.w.) and Abī Turāb (a.s.). You have killed the best of all those who ever rode (a sumpter). You have killed the best of everyone from among the youth to the elderly. There was a solar eclipse that lasted three days, after which the sky became filled with so many stars (that they were almost colliding with one another). On the next day, we were grief-stricken about the killing of Ḥusain (a.s.). Shortly thereafter, we learned the disastrous news of the killing of Ḥusain (a.s.).

3. Abul Ḥusain Aḥmad ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn ‘Ali Al-Nāqid narrated to me through his Isnād from ‘Umar ibn Sa’d, from Abī Ma’shar, from Al-Zuhri, who said: When Ḥusain (a.s.) was killed, no stone was moved in Bayt Al-Maqdis without seeing fresh blood under it.
