The Beard and Mustache
عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْخَزَّازِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ( صلوات الله عليه ) وَ الْحَجَّامُ يَأْخُذُ مِنْ لِحْيَتِهِ فَقَالَ دَوِّرْهَا .
5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from certain persons of his people from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once saw abu Ja‘far (a.s.), when the barber trimmed his beard, he (the Imam) said, ‘Make it round.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِنَّ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ أَنْ تَأْخُذَ مِنَ الشَّارِبِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْإِطَارَ .
6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The mustache must be trimmed until the lips become visible.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنِ الْعَمْرَكِيِّ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَصِّ الشَّارِبِ أَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ نَعَمْ .
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy ibn Ali from Ali ibn Ja‘far from his brother, abu al-Hassan (a.s.), who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about trimming the mustache; if it is of Sunnah. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is of Sunnah.”’
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ ذَكَرْنَا الْأَخْذَ مِنَ الشَّارِبِ فَقَالَ نُشْرَةٌ وَ هُوَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ .
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Once we mentioned trimming the mustache before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.). He (the Imam) said, ‘It is a charm and trimming it is of Sunnah.”’
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ أَنَّهُ رَأَى أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَحْفَى شَارِبَهُ حَتَّى أَلْصَقَهُ بِالْعَسِيبِ .
9. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from certain persons of his people from Ali ibn Asbat from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman who had seen abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), trim his mustache up to the root of the hairs.”’
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَمَّنْ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَا زَادَ عَلَى الْقَبْضَةِ فَفِي النَّارِ يَعْنِي اللِّحْيَةَ .
10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from those who narrated to him has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Whatever of beard exceeds the fist is in the fire.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا يُطَوِّلَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ شَارِبَهُ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَتَّخِذُهُ مَخْبَأً يَسْتَتِرُ بِهِ .
11. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘You must not allow your mustache to grow long; Satan makes it his hiding place and cover.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنِ الدِّهْقَانِ عَنْ دُرُسْتَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَرَّ بِالنَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) رَجُلٌ طَوِيلُ اللِّحْيَةِ فَقَالَ مَا كَانَ عَلَى هَذَا لَوْ هَيَّأَ مِنْ لِحْيَتِهِ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلَ فَهَيَّأَ لِحْيَتَهُ بَيْنَ اللِّحْيَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَلَمَّا رَآهُ قَالَ هَكَذَا فَافْعَلُوا .
12. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from certain persons of his people from al-Dihqan from Durust who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that a man with a long beard once passed by the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, who said, ‘He would not look like that had he prepared his beard.’ This remark reached that man and he prepared his beard, then visited the Holy Prophet. When he (the Messenger of Allah) saw him he said, ‘This is how you must keep it.’”

Removing Hairs from the Nostrils
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَمْزَةَ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَخْذُ الشَّعْرِ مِنَ الْأَنْفِ يُحَسِّنُ الْوَجْهَ .
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn Hamzah al-Ash‘ariy in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Removing hairs from the nostrils (outside) beautifies the face.”

Combing
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جُنْدَبٍ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ السِّمْطِ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) الثَّوْبُ النَّقِيُّ يَكْبِتُ الْعَدُوَّ وَ الدُّهْنُ يَذْهَبُ بِالْبُؤْسِ وَ الْمَشْطُ لِلرَّأْسِ يَذْهَبُ بِالْوَبَاءِ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَ مَا الْوَبَاءُ قَالَ الْحُمَّى وَ الْمَشْطُ لِلِّحْيَةِ يَشُدُّ الْأَضْرَاسَ .
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jundab from Sufyan ibn al-Simt who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Clean and fresh clothes saddens the enemy, using oil dispels despair and combing the head removes al-Waba’.’ I then asked, ‘What is al-Waba’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is fever. Combing the beard strengthens molar teeth.’”
