The Rights of Husband on His Wife
7- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنِ الْجَامُورَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ الْعَزْرَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا حَقُّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ قَالَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَتْ فَخَبِّرْنِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ لَهَا أَنْ تَصُومَ إِلا بِإِذْنِهِ يَعْنِي تَطَوُّعاً وَلا تَخْرُجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهَا إِلا بِإِذْنِهِ وَعَلَيْهَا أَنْ تَطَيَّبَ بِأَطْيَبِ طِيبِهَا وَتَلْبَسَ أَحْسَنَ ثِيَابِهَا وَتَزَيَّنَ بِأَحْسَنِ زِينَتِهَا وَتَعْرِضَ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ غُدْوَةً وَعَشِيَّةً وَأَكْثَرُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ حُقُوقُهُ عَلَيْهَا.
7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from al-Jamuraniy from ibn abu Hamzah from “Amr ibn Jubayr al-‘Arzamiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a woman came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is the right of husband on the wife?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Should I tell you a great deal about it?’ She said, ‘Tell me something about it.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘She must not fast an optional fast without his permission, must not go out of her house without his permission, must wear the best of perfumes for him and the best of her dresses, wear the best of make up for him, make herself available for him in the mornings and evenings; and his rights on her are more than this.’”
8- عَنْهُ عَنِ الْجَامُورَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَغْرَاءِ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ أَتَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَقَالَتْ مَا حَقُّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ فَقَالَ أَنْ تُجِيبَهُ إِلَى حَاجَتِهِ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ عَلَى قَتَبٍ وَلا تُعْطِيَ شَيْئاً إِلا بِإِذْنِهِ فَإِنْ فَعَلَتْ فَعَلَيْهَا الْوِزْرُ وَلَهُ الأجْرُ وَلا تَبِيتَ لَيْلَةً وَهُوَ عَلَيْهَا سَاخِطٌ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَإِنْ كَانَ ظَالِماً قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَتْ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لا تَزَوَّجْتُ زَوْجاً أَبَداً.
8. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from al-Jamuraniy from ibn abu Hamzah from abu al-Mighra’ from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that once a woman came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and asked, ‘What is the right of husband on the wife?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘Of his rights is to make herself available for him even when on the back of a camel and must not give anything without his permission. If she does it, she carries the sin and the reward is for him. She must not pass a night with him angry on her.’ She asked, ‘Even if he acts unjustly, O Messenger of Allah?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) replied, ‘Yes, even if he is as such.”

Detestability for Women to Stop their Husband
1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَغْرَاءِ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) لِلنِّسَاءِ لا تُطَوِّلْنَ صَلاتَكُنَّ لِتَمْنَعْنَ أَزْوَاجَكُنَّ.
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from Fadalah ibn Ayyub from abu al-Mighra’ from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said to women, ‘You must not prolong your Salat (prayer) to prevent your husbands.’”
2- عَنْهُ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ عَنْ ضُرَيْسٍ الْكُنَاسِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِنَّ امْرَأَةً أَتَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) لِبَعْضِ الْحَاجَةِ فَقَالَ لَهَا لَعَلَّكِ مِنَ الْمُسَوِّفَاتِ قَالَتْ وَمَا الْمُسَوِّفَاتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ الْمَرْأَةُ الَّتِي يَدْعُوهَا زَوْجُهَا لِبَعْضِ الْحَاجَةِ فَلا تَزَالُ تُسَوِّفُهُ حَتَّى يَنْعُسَ زَوْجُهَا وَيَنَامَ فَتِلْكَ لا تَزَالُ الْمَلائِكَةُ تَلْعَنُهَا حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ زَوْجُهَا.
2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Musa ibn al-Qasim from abu Jamilah from Durays al-Kunasiy from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who said: "Once a woman came to the Messenger of Allah (sw) for a certain need and he said to her, ‘Perhaps you are of the Musawwifat .’ She asked, ‘And what is the Musawwifat, O Messenger of Allah?’ He replied, ‘It is a woman whose husband calls her for something that he needs but she procrastinates until her husband begins to slumber and goes to sleep. The angels continue cursing her until her husband wakes up.’"

Detestability for Woman Ignoring Makeup
1- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رِئَابٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) النِّسَاءَ أَنْ يَتَبَتَّلْنَ وَيُعَطِّلْنَ أَنْفُسَهُنَّ مِنَ الأزْوَاجِ.
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab from ibn abu Ya’fur who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited women from ignoring themselves due to laziness and turning themselves of no benefit for their husbands.’”
2- ابْنُ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ الْعَلاءِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ لا يَنْبَغِي لِلْمَرْأَةِ أَنْ تُعَطِّلَ نَفْسَهَا وَلَوْ تُعَلِّقُ فِي عُنُقِهَا قِلادَةً وَلا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ تَدَعَ يَدَهَا مِنَ الْخِضَابِ وَلَوْ تَمْسَحُهَا مَسْحاً بِالْحِنَّاءِ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ مُسِنَّةً.
2. Ibn Mahbub has narrated from al-‘ Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘It is not proper for women to neglect themselves even from hanging a necklace from their necks. It is not proper for women to leave their hands without dye even if they are old.’”
3- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ قَالَ دَخَلَتِ امْرَأَةٌ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) فَقَالَتْ أَصْلَحَكَ اللهُ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُتَبَتِّلَةٌ فَقَالَ وَمَا التَّبَتُّلُ عِنْدَكِ قَالَتْ لا أَتَزَوَّجُ قَالَ وَلِمَ قَالَتْ أَلْتَمِسُ بِذَلِكَ الْفَضْلَ فَقَالَ انْصَرِفِي فَلَوْ كَانَ ذَلِكِ فَضْلا لَكَانَتْ فَاطِمَةُ (عَلَيْهِا السَّلام) أَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنْكِ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَسْبِقُهَا إِلَى الْفَضْلِ.
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ‘Abd al-Samad ibn Bashir who has said the following: “Once, a woman came to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, I am a celibate woman.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What does that mean to you?’ She replied, ‘I do not marry.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Why do you not marry?’ She replied, ‘I seek thereby excellence.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You must change your mind. Had that been anything of excellence, Fatimah, ‘Alayha al-Salam, would have been more deserving of it than you because no one could succeed against her to excel.’”

Treating One’s Wife with Honor
1- حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) أَيَضْرِبُ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَرْأَةَ ثُمَّ يَظَلُّ مُعَانِقَهَا.
1. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban from abu Maryam who has said the folio wing: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘How can one of you hurt the woman whom he continues to embrace? 5 ”
2- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) إِنَّمَا الْمَرْأَةُ لُعْبَةٌ مَنِ اتَّخَذَهَا فَلا يُضَيِّعْهَا.
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘A woman is like a doll which one chooses but does not waste or destroy. 5 ”
3- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ عَنْبَسَةَ عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الأسَدِيِّ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي الْمِقْدَامِ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَاصِمِيُّ عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ فِي رِسَالَةِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) إِلَى الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) لا تُمَلِّكِ الْمَرْأَةَ مِنَ الأمْرِ مَا يُجَاوِزُ نَفْسَهَا فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَنْعَمُ لِحَالِهَا وَأَرْخَى لِبَالِهَا وَأَدْوَمُ لِجَمَالِهَا فَإِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ رَيْحَانَةٌ وَلَيْسَتْ بِقَهْرَمَانَةٍ وَلا تَعْدُ بِكَرَامَتِهَا نَفْسَهَا وَاغْضُضْ بَصَرَهَا بِسِتْرِكَ وَاكْفُفْهَا بِحِجَابِكَ وَلا تُطْمِعْهَا أَنْ تَشْفَعَ لِغَيْرِهَا فَيَمِيلَ عَلَيْكَ مَنْ شَفَعَتْ لَهُ عَلَيْكَ مَعَهَا وَاسْتَبْقِ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ بَقِيَّةً فَإِنَّ إِمْسَاكَكَ نَفْسَكَ عَنْهُنَّ وَهُنَّ يَرَيْنَ أَنَّكَ ذُو اقْتِدَارٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ يَرَيْنَ مِنْكَ حَالا عَلَى انْكِسَارٍ. أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَسَنِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدَكٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ طَرِيفِ بْنِ نَاصِحٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عُلْوَانَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ طَرِيفٍ عَنِ الأصْبَغِ بْنِ نُبَاتَةَ عَنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) مِثْلَهُ إِلا أَنَّهُ قَالَ كَتَبَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ عَلَيْهِ بِهَذِهِ الرِّسَالَةِ إِلَى ابْنِهِ مُحَمَّدٍ رِضْوَانُ اللهِ عَلَيْهِ.
3. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from certain persons of our people from Ja’far ibn ‘Anbasah from ‘Abbad ibn Ziyad al-Asadiy from ‘Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam from Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), and Ahmad ibn Muhammad from those who narrated to him from Mu’afla’ ibn Muhammad al-Basriy from Ali ibn Hassan from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Kathir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that it is in the letter of ’Amir al-Mu 5 minin to al-Hassan (a.s.), which says, ‘You must not give control of things beyond her own affairs to a woman; it is easier for her condition, comfortable for her mind and helps her beauty to last longer, because women are like sweet basil and not a wrestling champion and she must not allow her soul to bypass her grace and honor. Help her to cast down her eyes by your covering, withhold her with your veil, and not to incite her to intercede for others before you so that the recommended incline toward her and go before yourself for the rest. Your restraining yourself from women when they see you dominant is better than their seeing you in a condition of breaking apart. 5 ” Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sa‘id has narrated from Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Hassaniy from Ali ibn ‘Abdaka from al-Hassan ibn Zarif ibn Nasih from al-Husayn ibn ‘Ulwan from Sa‘d ibn Tarif from al- Asbagh ibn Nubatah from ‘Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has narrated a similar Hadith except that he has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), wrote the letter to his son Muhammad, may Allah be pleased with him.
