The Detestability of Living Single
1- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) رَكْعَتَانِ يُصَلِّيهِمَا الْمُتَزَوِّجُ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ رَكْعَةً يُصَلِّيهَا أَعْزَبُ. عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الأشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) مِثْلَهُ.
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Two Rak’at Salat (prayer) performed by a married person is more virtuous than seventy Rak’at Salat (prayer) performed by a non-married person.’” “A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Ash’ariy from ibn al-Qaddah from abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), a similar Hadith.”
2- عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنِ الْجَامُورَانِيِّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ كُلَيْبِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ الأسَدِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) مَنْ تَزَوَّجَ أَحْرَزَ نِصْفَ دِينِهِ وَفِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ فَلْيَتَّقِ اللهَ فِي النِّصْفِ الآخَرِ أَوِ الْبَاقِي.
2. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from al-Jamuraniy from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn abu Hamzah from Kulayb ibn Mu‘awiyah al-Asadiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah (sw) said, ‘By getting married one secures one-half of his religion.’ In another Hadith it is said that one must thereafter maintain piety before Allah about the other one-half.”
3- وَعَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الأصَمِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) رُذَالُ مَوْتَاكُمُ الْعُزَّابُ.
3. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid from Muhammad al-Asamm who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The worthless dead among you are the unmarried ones.’”
4- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ لَمَّا لَقِيَ يُوسُفُ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) أَخَاهُ قَالَ يَا أَخِي كَيْفَ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَزَوَّجَ النِّسَاءَ بَعْدِي فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي أَمَرَنِي قَالَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَكُونَ لَكَ ذُرِّيَّةٌ تُثْقِلُ الأرْضَ بِالتَّسْبِيحِ فَافْعَلْ.
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When Yusuf met his brother, he asked, “How did you marry women after me?” He replied, “My father commanded me to do so and said, ‘If you can have so many children who will load the earth heavily with Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects), then you must do so.”””
5- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) تَزَوَّجُوا فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَتَّبِعَ سُنَّتِي فَإِنَّ مِنْ سُنَّتِيَ التَّزْوِيجَ.
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather, al-Hassan ibn Rashid from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), has said, ‘You must become married because the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, “Whoever wants to follow my Sunnah, must take notice that of my Sunnah is marriage.’””
6- عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ وَغَيْرُهُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ وَجَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) فَقَالَ لَهُ هَلْ لَكَ مِنْ زَوْجَةٍ فَقَالَ لا فَقَالَ أَبِي وَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِيَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا وَأَنِّي بِتُّ لَيْلَةً وَلَيْسَتْ لِي زَوْجَةٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ الرَّكْعَتَانِ يُصَلِّيهِمَا رَجُلٌ مُتَزَوِّجٌ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ رَجُلٍ أَعْزَبَ يَقُومُ لَيْلَهُ وَيَصُومُ نَهَارَهُ ثُمَّ أَعْطَاهُ أَبِي سَبْعَةَ دَنَانِيرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ تَزَوَّجْ بِهَذِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبِي قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) اتَّخِذُوا الأهْلَ فَإِنَّهُ أَرْزَقُ لَكُمْ.
6. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated and others have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah al-Barqiy form ibn Faddal and Ja’far ibn Muhammad from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Once, a man came to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he (the Imam) asked, ‘Are you married?’ The man replied, ‘No, I am not married.’ My father said, ‘I do not like to have the whole world but spend one night without wife.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Two Rak’at Salat (prayer) performed by a married man is better than an unmarried man’s performing Salat (prayer) the whole night and fasting during the day.’ My father gave him seven dinars and said, ‘You must get married with this.’ My father then said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Find a wife because it is helpful to increase your sustenance.’”
7- وَعَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) مِثْلَهُ وَزَادَ فِيهِ فَقَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَأَنَا لَيْسَ لِي أَهْلٌ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ لَكَ جَوَارِي أَوْ قَالَ أُمَّهَاتُ أَوْلادٍ قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ فَأَنْتَ لَيْسَ بِأَعْزَبَ.
7. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from ‘ Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah who has said the following: “‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah has narrated from abu al-Hassan (a.s.), a similar Hadith and added the following: Muhammad ibn ‘Ubayd said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I am not married.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Do you not have slave-girls’ or that he (the Imam) asked, ‘Do you not have mothers of your children?’ He replied, ‘Yes, I have.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You then are not an unmarried man.’”

With Marriage Sustenance Increases
1- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ وَلِيدِ بْنِ صَبِيحٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ مَنْ تَرَكَ التَّزْوِيجَ مَخَافَةَ الْعَيْلَةِ فَقَدْ أَسَاءَ بِاللهِ الظَّنَّ.
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from Hariz from Walid ibn Sabih from Abi Abdallah (a.s) who has said the following: “One who neglects marriage for fear of failure to feed his family has become distrustful of Allah.”’
2- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ وَعَبْدِ اللهِ ابْنَيْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ الْحَاجَةَ فَقَالَ تَزَوَّجْ فَتَزَوَّجَ فَوُسِّعَ عَلَيْهِ.
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad and ‘Abd Allah sons of Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Once a man came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and complained about his financial condition. He (the Messenger of Allah) told him to become married and he did so after which he became affluent.’”
3- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ [عَنْ أَبِيهِ] عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) شَابٌّ مِنَ الأنْصَارِ فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ الْحَاجَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ تَزَوَّجْ فَقَالَ الشَّابُّ إِنِّي لأسْتَحْيِي أَنْ أَعُودَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَلَحِقَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأنْصَارِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ لِي بِنْتاً وَسِيمَةً فَزَوَّجَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَ فَوَسَّعَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ [قَالَ] فَأَتَى الشَّابُّ النَّبِيَّ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْبَاهِ.
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Salih al-Sindiy from Ja’far ibn Bashir from Ali ibn abu Hamzah from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Once a young man from al-Ansar (people of al- Madinah) came to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and complained about his needs. He (the Messenger of Allah) told him to become married. The young man said, “I feel shy to come to the Messenger of Allah to ask for help again.” A man from al-Ansar (people of al-Madinah) followed him and said, “I have a beautiful daughter.” He gave her in marriage to him. Allah granted increase in his sustenance. The young man came to the Holy Prophet, informed him of his condition and the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, said, “You, the young people, must get married.’””
