Offering the Greeting of Peace

2191. hadíth Majlisī: سكت عنه

15ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يُكْرَهُ لِلرَّجُلِ أَنْ يَقُولَ حَيَّاكَ الله ثُمَّ يَسْكُتَ حَتَّى يَتْبَعَهَا بِالسَّلامِ.

15. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfali from al-Sakuni from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘It is undesirable for a man to say, “May Allah keep you living,” then remain silent without offering the greeting of peace thereafter.’”

The One Who Must Offer the Greeting of Peace

2192. hadíth Majlisī: مجهول

1ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ جَرَّاحٍ الْمَدَائِنِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ يُسَلِّمُ الصَّغِيرُ عَلَى الْكَبِيرِ وَالْمَارُّ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ وَالْقَلِيلُ عَلَى الْكَثِيرِ.

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al- Husayn ibn Sa’id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from Jarrah al-Mad’ini from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The younger ones offer greetings of peace to the elders, passing by those who are stationary and fewer people to those of a greater number.”

2193. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

2ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ عَنْبَسَةَ بْنِ مُصْعَبٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ الْقَلِيلُ يَبْدَءُونَ الْكَثِيرَ بِالسَّلامِ وَالرَّاكِبُ يَبْدَأُ الْمَاشِيَ وَأَصْحَابُ الْبِغَالِ يَبْدَءُونَ أَصْحَابَ الْحَمِيرِ وَأَصْحَابُ الْخَيْلِ يَبْدَءُونَ أَصْحَابَ الْبِغَالِ.

2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Salih ibn al-Sindi from Ja’far ibn Bashir from ‘Anbasah ibn Mus’ab from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Those fewer in number initiate greetings of peace to those of a greater number, one riding to the one walking, people riding mules to those riding donkeys and those riding horses offer greeting of peace to those riding on mules.”

3ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ يُسَلِّمُ الرَّاكِبُ عَلَى الْمَاشِي وَالْمَاشِي عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ وَإِذَا لَقِيَتْ جَمَاعَةٌ جَمَاعَةً سَلَّمَ الأقَلُّ عَلَى الأكْثَرِ وَإِذَا لَقِيَ وَاحِدٌ جَمَاعَةً سَلَّمَ الْوَاحِدُ عَلَى الْجَمَاعَةِ.

3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Asbat from ibn Bukayr from certain individuals of his people who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘A person riding should offer greetings of peace to the one walking, the one walking to the one stationary and sitting. On meeting a group the one in smaller numbers offers the greeting of peace to that in greater numbers and one person offers greetings of peace to a group.”’

2195. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

4ـ سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الأشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ يُسَلِّمُ الرَّاكِبُ عَلَى الْمَاشِي وَالْقَائِمُ عَلَى الْقَاعِدِ.

4. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Ash’ari from ibn al- Qaddah from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “A person riding should offer greetings of peace to the one walking on foot and the one standing should offer greetings of peace to the one sitting.”

2196. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

5ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ عَنْ جَمِيلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ قَوْمٌ فِي مَجْلِسٍ ثُمَّ سَبَقَ قَوْمٌ فَدَخَلُوا فَعَلَى الدَّاخِلِ أَخِيراً إِذَا دَخَلَ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ.

5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz from Jamil from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “If two groups attend the same meeting, the group entering last should offer greetings of peace to those who have entered first.”

Offer or Answer of Greetings of Peace by one Person From a Group Is Sufficient

2197. hadíth Majlisī: ضعيف

1ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِذَا مَرَّتِ الْجَمَاعَةُ بِقَوْمٍ أَجْزَأَهُمْ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمْ وَإِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ وَهُمْ جَمَاعَةٌ أَجْزَأَهُمْ أَنْ يَرُدَّ وَاحِدٌ مِنْهُمْ.

1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Asbat from ibn Bukayr from certain individuals of his people from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “If one person from a group passing by another group offers the greeting of peace it is sufficient for all and so also is for an answer if only one person from the stationary group responds.”

2198. hadíth Majlisī: صحيح

2ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ الرَّجُلُ مِنَ الْجَمَاعَةِ أَجْزَأَ عَنْهُمْ.

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj who has said the following from the Imam: “If one person offers the greeting of peace for a whole group it is considered enough and sufficient.”

2199. hadíth Majlisī: موثق

3ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ غِيَاثِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ وَاحِدٌ أَجْزَأَ عَنْهُمْ وَإِذَا رَدَّ وَاحِدٌ أَجْزَأَ عَنْهُمْ.

3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following from the Imam: “If one person from a group offers the greeting of peace it is sufficient for all and so also is for an answer if only one person from the stationary group responds.”

Offering Greeting of Peace to Women

2200. hadíth Majlisī: حسن

1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ الله عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ وَيَرْدُدْنَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامَ وَكَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ وَكَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُسَلِّمَ عَلَى الشَّابَّةِ مِنْهُنَّ وَيَقُولُ أَتَخَوَّفُ أَنْ يُعْجِبَنِي صَوْتُهَا فَيَدْخُلَ عَلَيَّ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا أَطْلُبُ مِنَ الأجْرِ.

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Rib’i ibn ‘Abd Allah from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah would offer greeting of peace to women and they would respond to him. Amir al-Mu’ minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) would offer greeting of peace to women but he disliked offering it to the young women. He would say, ‘I fear their voice may attract me and a feeling may cause me more harm than the reward for offering the greeting of peace.’”
