The Twenty-Ninth Assembly, the Gathering on Friday, the Eighth of Muharram, 368 AH.

The venerable Shaykh Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi narrated to us. He said: My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad and `Abdullah, sons of Muhammad b. `Isa, and Muhammad b. al-Hasan narrated to us from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from Muhammad b. al-Qasim al-Nawfali. He said: I said to Abu `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as): A believer sees a dream and it is (i.e. happens, takes place) as he had seen it. And sometimes he sees a dream, but it is nothing (i.e. of no consequence)? So, he said: Surely, when the believer sleeps, there emerges an extended movement from his spirit (i.e. part of the spirit travels), ascending towards the heaven. So, whatever the spirit of the believer sees in the kingdom of the heaven in the place of (Divine) decree and regulation, it is true. And whatever he sees on the earth, then they are confused dreams. So, I said to him: Does the spirit rise towards the heaven? He said: Yes. I said: Until there remains nothing of it in the body? So, he said: No, were all of it to leave until there remained nothing of it, he would certainly be dead. I said: So how does it leave? He said: Surely, you see the sun in the sky in its place and its light and its ray on the earth; similarly, the source of the spirit is in the body and its movement, extended, towards the heaven.

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ya`qub b. Yazid narrated to us. He said: One of our companions narrated to me from Zakariyya b. Yahya from Mu`awiyah b. `Ammar from Abu Ja`far. He said: When the servants sleep, their spirits exit towards the heaven. So, what the spirit sees in the heaven, is true. And what it sees in the atmosphere, it is far from reality. Now surely the spirits are enlisted soldiers [of an army]. Then whichever of them gets acquainted with the other, it unites [with the other] and whichever of them rejects the other, it diverges [from the other]. So, when the spirit is in the heaven, it gets acquainted [with another] and it loathes [another, mutually]. And when they are acquainted in the heaven, they are acquainted on Earth and when they loathe each other in the heaven, they loathe each other on earth.

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abu’l Khattab narrated to us from `Isa b. `Abdullah al-`Alawi from his father `Abdullah b. Muhammad b. `Umar b. `Ali b. Abu Talib from his father from his grandfather from `Ali (as). He said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (s) about the man who sleeps and then dreams. So sometimes it is true and sometimes it is false. The Messenger of Allah (s) said: O `Ali! There is no servant who sleeps but that he is raised with his spirit towards the Lord of the worlds. So, what he sees near the Lord of the worlds is the truth. Then when Allah, the Mighty, the Omnipotent orders with the return of his spirit to his body, the spirit is between the heaven and the Earth. So, what it sees [then] are confused dreams.

And from him by his isnad from `Ali b. al Hakam from Aban b. `Uthman. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abu’l Khattab narrated to me from Muhsin b. Ahmad al-Maythami from Aban b. `Uthman from Abu Basir from Abu Ja`far (as). He said: I heard him say: Surely, there is a devil for Iblis known as Haz` (هزع) who fills up what is between the East and the West every night. He comes to them in [their] sleep.

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (ra) narrated to us. My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Isa al-Yaqtini from Ahmad b. `Abdullah al-Farwi from his father. He said: I visited Fadl b. Rabih and he was sitting on the roof. He said: Come to me. I went close that I was right next to him. He said: Look to the side of that house. I looked to where he pointed, then he asked me: What do you see in the house? I said: I see a thrown cloak. He said: Look closer. I gazed attentively and scrutinized my vision, and then I was certain. I said: A man in prostration. He said: Do you know him? I said: No. He said: This is your master. I said: Who is my master? He said: Are you fooling me? I said: I am not fooling you. I do not know a master. Then he said: This is Abu’l Ḥasan Musa b. Ja`far. I inspect him day and night, and I have not seen him at any time except in this state which I shall describe to you: He prays Fajr, and afterwards he follows that with worship for an hour after his prayer (ta`qib) till sunrise. He then bows down in a prostrates and remains in prostration till midday. Someone was appointed to him to check for midday; I do not know when the boy recognizes that the Sun has reached midday. Then, [the Imam] rises and begins his [Thuhr] prayer, without renewing his ritual ablutions (wudu’), and by this I know that he has not slept during his prostration and did not drowse. He remains in this state [of worship] till he finishes the `Asr prayer. If he prays `Asr, he then bows in a prostration and remains in prostration until the Sun sets. When the Sun sets, he rises from prostration and prays Maghrib without renewing anything, and he remains in the state of prayer and worship until he prays the first night prayer (`Isha’). When he finishes all this, he breaks his fast on something roasted that is brought to him. He then renews his ablutions. After that, he rises and spends the whole night in worship until dawn. I do not know how the boy recognizes and tells that it is time for Fajr, that I see him [Imam Musa] rising for Fajr prayer. This has been his state since the time he was transferred to me. Then, I said: Fear Allah, and do not do something ill to him which might cause you to be deprived of grace. You know well that no one does harm to one of them [the Ahl al-Bayt] without their bounties vanishing. He said: They sent to me more than once commanding me to kill him but I did not answer them to this, and I made them know that I will not do this, and that even if they kill me I will not answer them to what they are asking me to do. After that, [the Imam] was transferred to Fadl b. Yaḥya al-Barmaki. He was imprisoned there for days, and Fadl b. Rabih used to send him a meal each night. He was the only one allowed to enter upon him, so [the Imam] did not eat and did not break his fast except on this meal which was sent to him. This condition remained for three days and nights. On the fourth night, a meal was presented to him by Fadl b. Yaḥya (not Fadl b. Rabih). He (as) raised his hands to the sky and said: O Lord! You know that if I ate this before this day, I would have been performing suicide by my own hands. He ate, and then he got sick. The next day he was sent a doctor to inspect the illness. The doctor said to him: How are you? He did not answer him. When the doctor insisted, he let out the palm of his hand and showed it to the doctor and said: This is my disease. There was a greenness in his hand which indicated that he was poisoned, and the poison had gathered in that point. The doctor left and he said to: By Allah, he knows what you did to him more than you do! Then, he (as) passed away.

Abu Ja`far narrated to me. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar and Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated together to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Yaqtin from his father al-Husayn from his father `Ali b. Yaqtin. He said: [The Caliph Harun] al-Rashid called for a man to invalidate the authority of Abi’l Hasan Musa b. Ja`far (as), to refute him and to embarrass him in the gathering. So, he appointed a sorcerer. When the banquet was brought, he summoned a spirit (namus) over the bread; every time the servant of Abi’l Hasan (as) took a piece of bread, it would fly out of his hands. By that, Harun was overtaken with joy and laughing. Then, Abu’l Hasan (as) lifted his head to an image of a lion [painted] on a fabric. He said to it: O lion of Allah! Seize the enemy of Allah. He said: The image of the lion leaped into the mightiest of lions and devoured the sorcerer. Then, Harun and his men fell unconscious to their faces – their minds were blown in fear of what they had seen. When they awoke from that after a while, Harun said to Abi’l Hasan (as): I ask you by my right over you – ask this image to bring the man back. So, he said: If the staff of Musa (as) could return what it swallowed from the ropes of the people, then this image would return what it swallowed from this man. This was from the most effective of things in the awakening of his soul.

He said: My father narrated to me from Sa`d b. `Abdullah from Muhammad b. `Isa b. `Ubayd al-Yaqtini from al-Hasan b. Muhammad b. Bashar. He said: An `ammi shaykh from Qati`atul Rabi`, whose words were accepted, narrated to me that he had seen people declare the virtue of a man from the People of this House. [He said:] I have never seen anyone as ascetic and as virtuous as him. He said: I said: Who? How did you see him? He said: One day, eighty of us – men of renown and goodness – gathered to al-Sindi b. Shahik, and we visited Musa b. Ja`far (as). So, a-Sindi said to us: O you! Look to this man – has anything happened to him? For surely, the people allege that he has been treated wrongly, and they make much ado about that. This is his house and his furnishings; it is expansive for him and not narrow. The commander of the faithful does not want any harm to come to him. Surely, he is only waiting for him to come and for the commander of the faithful to converse with him. Here he is, he is healthy, and all his affairs are widely available to him. He said: We had no concerns, so we only looked to the man and to his virtue and his character. Then, he said: As for what he mentioned regarding the wideness [of available things] and its like, then it is as he has mentioned. Except, I will inform you, O people, that I was fed poison in nine dates, and that I will turn green tomorrow, and that after tomorrow I will die. He said: So, I looked to al-Sindi b. Shahik, and he was shuddering and shaking like a ringworm. Al-Hasan said: This shaykh was from the best of the `amma. He was trustworthy, and his words were accepted. He was trusted very much by the people.

Abu Ja`far narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Kufi narrated to us from Musa b. `Imran al-Nakha`I from his uncle al-Husayn b. Yazid al-Nawfali from `Ali b. Salim from his father from Thabit b. Dinar. He said: I asked Zayn al-`Abidin `Ali b. al-Husayn b. `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) about Allah – is He described with a place? So, he said: Allah is exalted from that. I said: Then why did He bring His Prophet, Muhammad (s), to heaven? He said: To show him the kingdom of heaven; the wonder of its design and the contrivance of its creation. I said: [What about] the saying of Allah, “Then he drew near and hung suspended, that he was only two bow-lengths away and even closer.” (53:8-9)? He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) drew near to the veils of light and saw the kingdom of heaven. Then, he (s) hung suspended and saw the kingdom of Earth beneath him, till he thought that he was near the Earth like that of two bow-lengths away and even closer.

She said: The crowd came into our pavilion. I was a young girl, and I had gold anklets on my feet. A man rushed to take the anklets from my feet whilst he was weeping. So, I said: “What makes you cry, O enemy of Allah?!” So, he said: “How can I not weep when I am robbing the daughter of the Messenger of Allah?!” So, I said: “Do not rob me.” He said: “I fear someone else may take it.” She said: They took everything in the buildings to the point where they even took the cloaks off our backs.
